Who was the first movie star you ever had a crush on?

Inquiring minds want to know.

(pssst. I've also added a "current celebrity crushes" feature down in the sidebar to be updated periodically. I'm always tinkering)

Ann-Margret....opening sequence of "Bye Bye Birdie." va-va-vooom!

mine was probably Hayley Mills in Parent Trap --my favorite movie until I was like 8 or something which I would watch every chance I got on TV. There was also a huge crush on the twins ("Tia and Tony") in Return From Witch Mountain. That, along with my thwarted desperation to see Grease (too raunchy said mom & dad), is my most vivid movie memory of 1978.

I roughly recall my 12-years-old self harboring a brief, but massive crush on Tom Cruise, ante-couch-jumping, from watching Jerry Maguire on TBS 5 years ago.

Drew Barrymore. She was six and so was I.

Mary Poppins! So I guess that would be Julie Andrews.

Hayley Mills in Pollyanna got to me, as well...

And then came a young Jan-Michael Vincent in The World's Greatest Athlete. He made me forget all about Mary Poppins!

Jonathan Brandis in The NeverEnding Story 2. I was about 7 then.

Winona Ryder, up until third grade when I fell in love with Emma Bunton. But to this day, every time I see Winona, my heart skips a beat, and I think on what might have been...

Michael J. Fox, aaah, the memories... Back To The Future II blew my nine-year-old mind.

Leelee Sobieski caught my eyes in Never been Kissed when I was like 6 :P

Atreyu from The Neverending Story and Aladdin. Yeah, the Disney cartoon guy.

River Phoenix in 'Stand By Me' when I was a wee lad. I'm sure my parents kept renting it because they thought I related to the kids and their journey, but really I was all about the foul language and River Phoenix being dreamy.

Evan Rachel Wood in "Thirteen" - I like them damaged girls...

carter said...

I've always had a planotic thing for Elija Wood... but it's all about River Phoenix in Stand by Me and then Little Nikita and then Mosquito Coast ... and then Idaho and then Sneakers... sigh...

Catherine said...

Oh yeah, Elijah Wood, definitley. I used to be obsessed with Frodo. I remember just after The Fellowship came out, I was 11 and pretty much knew the movie off my heart. We had a weekly "meditation" session at school with this nun and once I decided to pretend that instead of sitting in a circle with my classmates and a nun, I was Frodo at the Council of Elrond. So I had my fake ring and was repeating all the lines in my head and doing the weird possesed eye-thing that Frodo does... At the end of the hour, as we all walked back to class, the nun said goodbye at the doorway. She had a special thing to say to each girl, "Hope you enjoyed the meditaion", "That's a pretty hairband", "Didn't I know your sister?" etc. When I walked past, she grabbed my arm, pulled me aside and asked if I was feeling okay.

This is embarassing, but when I was 13 I saw Maxwell Caulfield in Grease 2 and wanted more than anything for him to take me away on that motorcycle.

NATHANIEL R said...

a cool rider huh, Chris?

My cool rider obsession was Batgirl. I can't help it. the batman series was on tv in syndication constantly. Early onset of actressexuality i suppose. I was all about Yvonne Craig.

carter and adam happy to hear of River Phoenix memories. I miss him. So sad and freaked out when he died. Similar in fact to the recent situation with Heath Ledger such a hugely promising actor who wasn't that far removed from his greatest performance (my own private idaho)

I don't remember who my first was, but during my teenage years i had a huge crush on Alicia Silverstone thanks to the Aerosmith videos.

Ooooh.... Definitely Leo. My babysitter introduced me to him when I was 10 or 11 with R&J. And then Titanic came out the next year.... First film I saw more than once in the theatre. First time I watched the Oscars. Reason I became obsessed with Oscars/movies/pop culture/useless trivia.... Thanks Leo!

Anonymous said...

Yes, Bezzie, on Michael J. Fox, and Dominique on Leo and a subsequent love of movies! I also have to add Robert Downey Jr., weirdly enough-- I loved Heart and Souls a ridiculous amount when I was young.

Anonymous said...

perhaps not exactly a star... at least not the actor... but definitely the character! ;o)

Luke Skywalker! :o)

Anonymous said...

Hayley Mills for sure!

And then Jack Wild in Oliver!

Yes, God, I'm old!

Anonymous said...

Tom Cruise in "Jerry Maguire". I was 12 and there was that sex scene with Kelly Preston. After some time I realized that it was only Tom I kept thinking of... A couple of years earlier Lauren Bacall made a lasting impression on me in "How to marry a millionaire": such a powerful and fascinating persona... And when I was a kid I had an absolutely platonic crush on Hayley Mills: once I even dreamed we had met and fallen in love, but she was actually a fairy and had to go back to the realm of fairies on some star very far in the galaxy... I swear!

Anonymous said...

Allison Doody in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. OK, maybe she wasn't the first, but it's as far back as I can remember.

Anonymous said...

Christian Bale would have to be mine- I saw him in Little Women when I was 8 and we've been inseparable ever since :)

lylee said...

Charlton Heston in "Ben-Hur." Yep. And didn't care that he in present-day real life was old enough to be my grandpa and had (to me) reprehensible politics. He just smouldered so beautifully.

Nat, hope you're feeling better.

Embeth Davidtz in Matilda. I also fell slightly in love with several of my teachers when I was younger, which is probably where my (continuing to this day, thanks to Junebug) love for Embeth stems from. I never had a teacher quite so wonderful as Miss Honey, though...

River Phoenix!

Anonymous said...

John Ritter....sorry, it's a bit embarrassing to admit. in fact I'm going anonymous with this. However, what's a love struck 11 year old boy to do seeing Jack Tripper traipse around in those yummy short shorts....and Jack's "pretending" to be gay. Wowsa. Just imagine the possibilities - my little mind wandered and wondered! Chrissy...Janet!!!!

Richard Gere was my first crush. Hugh Grant was my second.

Nowadays, it's all about Heath Ledger. I'm absolutely heartsick that he's gone.

I'm gonna have to say Christian Bale in Little Women. Oh Laurie...he was sooo sexy.

My first was Ariel from The Little Mermaid, then I was obsessed with Evan Rachel Wood when I saw Thirteen and now I'm a Hermoine Granger guy. Me encanta Emma Watson.

Jean Simmons in Spartacus

I would have sacrificed parts of my anatomy to dive into that pond she was bathing in.

I have to admit I had a crush on Lindsay Lohan back when I was a child and she starred in "The Parent Trap"...

I loved both Peter O'Toole and Audrey Hepburn in "How To Steal A Million". She was the daughter of an art forger in Paris (Hugh Griffith), and mistook O'Toole for a thief, not the investigator he really was. Such elegance, such grace, such sexiness, from both.

Givenchy and Paris - I could hardly wait to grow up and be an adult like Audrey in love with someone like Peter.

For, like, actual people who aren't anime characters... I think it was Natalie Portman as Padmé. Hey, I was 6! What do you want me to do with that much prettiness?!

...by which I mean the costumes, of course. She ain't bad lookin', though.

Must have had the seat next to thombeau during "Mary Poppins"...but I am not sure I am over mine yet. Unsurprisingly, I adored "S.O.B." when it came out.

The Jaded Armchair Reviewer said...

I can't remember anymore who came first for me: Audrey Hepburn in Sabrina or Ingrid Bergman in Gaslight.

Honorable mention to Marilyn Monroe in Some Like It Hot.

Wow. Have I really fallen in love with so many movie stars that I've forgotten my first time?

Probably between Andrew McCarthy (Mannequin) and Christian Slater. But I remember Christian Slater more when I watched Robinhood with my parents in the cinema. Especially when he started to sing "There was a man from Nottingham who wants to cross the river" I was about 8 hehehehehe

I fell in love with Winona Ryder when I saw Beetlejuice...so angry.

I fell in love with Christina Ricci when I saw the Addams Family.

First gay crush was the entire cast of Newsies...David Moscow, Luke Edwards and the God that is Mr. Bale himself...shut up, okay? I was a kid. Plus, check out the cast of Newsies now. As far as looks go, there's nary a slouch among them.

NATHANIEL R said...

Doc P --hopefully not important parts!

the know nothing newsies, eh? perhaps i should do a piece on that. I love Christian Bale's "Santa Fe" singing. Is there anything he can't do?

17 i don't get the Emma Watson thing at all. But you're not alone. That problem is practically an epidemic ;)

A weird one: Ralph Fiennes in Quiz Show.

It had a lot to do with a real life crush who articulates almost exactly like Fiennes does when he puts on his North American accent.

The real life crush is gone, but the one on Fiennes still lingers a little...

George Chakiris - West Side Story.

Went with my Mom and Grandmum when I was still quite young. It was the purple shirt he wore during the big dance scene. Sadly he never did anything else I enjoyed as much.
But the film did start my lust for latinos...which I've since out grown.
But still think are sexy. sorry tmi

Christian Slater was my first serious movie crush.

And still think he's a top prize 15 years later.

Funnily enough, Jennifer Connolly in Labyrinth, although I'm fairly certain David Bowie's tights were sending out homo vibes to me. I do remember also being strangely intrigued by Josh Brolin's arms in Goonies, although I'm sure at the time I had no understanding of why.

And I do remember having a thing for, ahem, Kevin Costner. I hadn't actually seen any of his movies, but I had seen him in the video clip for "I Will Always Love You" from The Bodyguard.

How odd.

Glenn Dunks said...

Oh! I definitely remember having a thing for Devin Kamin in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (he's the white rapper "Frankie")

If I can remember correctly it was either Michael J. Fox or Andrew McCarthy...or both. Back to the Future and Mannequin did me in.

I remember having the hots for Shelley Long when she starred in 'Night Shift' with Henry Winkler and Michael Keaton. There was one scene where she had on bikini briefs and t-shirt while she made breakfast. I was in love. It was deep and it was real.

Alicia Silverstone. I saw her in the Aerosmith videos and was hooked. Clueless came out soon after that and I was in heaven. Then I watched her slow descent into oblivion.

Christian Bale. I was 10 or 11 when my dad took me to watch Henry V. After the movie I wrote my dad a letter telling him how I was in love with the young boy in the movie.

River Phoenix, Christian Bale, Matt Dillon as Dally in The Outsiders, "Jake Ryan" in 16 Candles

I feel really gross writing this, but my first movie crush was Macaulay Culkin in "My Girl".

Don't judge me! I was 8 years old!

Oh, God, don't even get me started. Let's see, there was River Pheonix in Stand By Me, Christian Bale in Empire of the Sun, Andre Gower from The Monster Squad, and I don't remember his name, but the middle child from the 3 Ninjas movies.
