Nathaniel, you're mention in the New York Times by David Carr. I don't know who to link, though.

i just saw it! Unfortunately the link is incorrect but I sent them a correction request.

Kudos for the "Milk" reference.

I'm surprised that there hasn't yet been a Milk spoof with James Franco in a "Got Milk?" ad. Those Brokeback haters really have a mistimed sense of humour...

The Times has been spanked and corrected.

Congrats on the NYTimes shout out, Nathanile.

Here's for a bigger and better 2009.

I miss CTHD-era Ziyi, when she was, you know, working. And not even just in good movies, but working at all. :(

Also, congrats on the NYTimes mention, Nat! :)

Bring on the Film Bitch Awards!

I'm so excited to see who gets the 5th spot on your best actress ballot. I'm assuming it's Winslet (Reader), Hawkins, Hathaway, Leo, and someone... I have a feeling you're not going with Streep, since you expressed reservations about her perf. Scott-Thomas? Michelle Williams? I dunno. It's a toughie.

Also not sure who'll make your actor cut now that the guy from Hunger is apparently out of the running. I was assuming he had the 5th spot (at least) beside Penn, Rourke, DiCaprio, and Jenkins. We'll see who takes it now...

And is Viola Davis a supporting performance or a cameo/limited role? The suspense, the suspense...

The one with Ziyi Zhang is one of my favorite milk ads.

Has anyone here seen a Christmas Tale? I'd like to know your opinion on the film because i really hated it.

I can't wait to see which nine dancers you choose; after all, "dancer" is gender-neutral. Astaire and Rogers? Kelly? West Side folk? ...Bjork?

RE BROKEBACK AS JOKE

Brokeback Mountain was the subject of jokes because it's arguably the first truly gay film to have mainstream crossover appeal.

People needed to find an outlet for addressing their emotions about the subject matter. You know. "I am straight. I liked Brokeback. Did I mention I am straight? " Silence. Crickets. "By the way, did you hear this brokeback joke."

You had guys like Howard Stern liking the movie . Thus, the jokes.

I think the novelty wore off after the first time. There are straight guys who will never see a gay movie. But, for some they need to make it clear "i am watching the movie as a straight guy."

Well- at least that's what I hope as a filmmaker who has two projects with gay protags in stories with crossover appeal.

Adam, Famke Janssen and Michelle Williams are my bets for at least two spots. hmmm.

I need to read this NYTimes piece. Link?

Famke Janssen is very possible, it's true. I know Winslet, Hathaway, and Hawkins will be there. Leo, perhaps not. Michelle Williams I think could totally go either way. Nat seems to feel very warmly toward KST, too, despite his opinion of her film.

It's kind of a crapshoot.

Also, in my experience with non-American straight men, I find them MUCH more likely not to have hangups about gay things re: their sexuality. The discomfort with "gay" is somewhat biological but is also largely a product of good ol' fashioned American values. I'll take that one to the bank.

awww thanks. The CarpetBagger is good to me. Has anyone read David Carr's memoir Night of the Gun. I'm totally curious.

In response to Harvey, I thought A Christmas Tale was about a half hour too long. I couldn't fault the actors but I hated a lot of the characters. I went in expecting too much.

Nathaniel, if you're by the Strand, they have Carr's book downstairs for half price.
