Lunchtime Poll #3

I know, I know. These posts are like filler or B-sides. But it's also "back-to-school" week, so I gotta keep lifting from Heathers. At least for a few more days.

Answer in the comments -No lurking!
You must live the rest of your life inside the movies --but here's the catch: You'll only live inside one person's filmography. Name the director and why you chose him / her"

The temptation being to pick a favourite, like Almodovar or Allen. But I don't particularly fancy the tragedy and angst. So I'm going to live in Ron Howard's filmography. That way I can be airbrushed 24/7 and I don't have to cross paths with anything too subtle.

Either Robert Wise's or Stanley Kubrick's. They have tackled different genres, and I don't want my life to be boring. Imagine, me being the "new man" a la 2001, or Captain Kirk in Star Trek, or Maria Von Trapp, or even a psycho (The Shinning).

Radley Metzger, specifically his films from Dirty Girls to Little Mother. If I have to choose a life, why not be hedonistic Eurotrash?

I was going to say Russ Meyer, but the allure of the Eurotrash decadence of Radley Metzger may be too strong... There's all that violence in Meyer's movies... Metzger it is.

my initial impulse was to say Baz Luhrmann's --and not just because I've been obsessing on Moulin Rouge! but it might prove really exhausting... A.D.D. as a lifestyle I mean.

so i might want to say Lubitsch instead.

I feel like staying with Vincente Minnelli today,... just because I would love to spend my whole life bathing in fantastic Anscocolor, Eastmancolor or Technicolor!
...also living in sets designed by Cedric Gibbons would be much nicer than in my Ikea-appartment!

Anyone but Lars von Trier! Can you imagine an entire life of martyrdom?

yes i can. i grew up with my mother.

Michael Mann, because I'd like to look that good in three-day stubble. Or Ernst Lubitsch, because I'd like to always have something witty to say. I'd settle for being a colorful extra in a James Whale film.

I was gonna say Almodovar, no contest, but then I actually thought about it, and I probably have to go with Robert Wise. That way, I can have the Star Trek universe for eternal wonder, and the Sound of Music if I feel like being happy, AND West Side Story for the visceral thrills and great music. Plus all those many many other films of his that I haven't even seen.

What a life that would be.

John Hughes. Ah, if only high school was that exciting...

I would definitely pick Wes Anderson because he populates his movies with oddballs that I would love to hang out all day with!

Nora Ephron because she usually delivers a happy ending. I'm an emotional codependant who requires certainty and all that happily n ever after shit even though it supposedly doesn't exist.

LUIS BUÑUEL because my life wouldn't be boring -NEVER-, it would be weird but exciting, sometimes sad, sometimes joyful, sometimes scary and desperate but everydday would be different.

Michael Winterbottom. I'd spend one film in a state of constant coitus (9 Songs) with some music thrown in. Then I'd spend one film listening to music constantly (24 Hour Party People). I'd be there with the problems of immigrants (In this World) and journalists during wartime (Welcome to Sarejevo). Altmanesque Old West? Why not (The Claim). Dystopian future? Check (Code 46).

And, if I play my cards right, I could lay my eyes on Angelina Jolie (A Might Heart).

Several directors come to mind. Baz Luhrmann's would mean my world was constantly colourful and full of life (and filled with good looking people!).

Then there's John Hughes/Howard Deutch whose worlds are irresistable and his characters are so great.

And then I thought Christopher Guest, but if I actually had to spend 24/7 with those characters I don't know if they'd still be so funny?

I even vaguely considering Paul Verhoeven because think of all that sex?!

Or there was Tim Burton, which would always been odd and interesting.

But in the end I decided to go with Robert Altman for one main reason. I would never be lonely.

The temptation is to say Woody Allen, so that I can still pull tail well into my seventies. The drawbacks being that (a) that tail will be female, and (b) I would be far too annoying for other people to deal with.

The case for Wes Anderson, however, is a strong one. Strange enough to be interesting, warm enough to be happy, and the universe is populated by people worth getting to know.

There's no way I could name one of my favorites - Kubrick (!), von Trier (!!), Anderson (!!!) -- no misery for me please. I'd prefer the sweeter but mostly realistic worlds of Cameron Crowe (not to mention the delightful music I'd be hearing all the time).
