Golden Globe Nominations Are Here

DRAMA

Best Picture
American Gangster, Atonement, Eastern Promises, The Great Debaters, Michael Clayton, No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood
Seven nominees !? Really Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Are you eager to become The Golden Satellites? How embarrassing... get it together. The surprise snub would have to be Into the Wild.

Best Actor
George Clooney, Michael Clayton
Daniel Day-Lewis, There Will Be Blood
James McAvoy, Atonement
Viggo Mortenson, Eastern Promises
Denzel Washington, American Gangster
Bad news for Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild) but I'm so glad my Viggo is in... and perhaps the extra push they give the film (in Picture) might be the boost he needed to stay in the race for someone who a) refused Academy membership and b) is a great performer but doesn't take truly Baity roles.

Best Actress
Cate Blanchett, Elizabeth The Golden Age
Julie Christie, Away From Her
Jodie Foster, The Brave One
Anelina Jolie, A Mighty Heart
Keira Knightley, Atonement
Just as I suspected but it wasn't hard. Most of the heat was in comedy. Still, one has to wonder now if Cate will get her default double dip with Oscar after all. ayiyiyiyi.

COMEDY/MUSICAL

Best Picture

Across The Universe, Charlie Wilsons War, Hairspray, Juno, Sweeney Todd
Say what? And I don't speak of Charlie (which if it was going to do well it would be here) but of Across the Universe. Snubbed: Knocked Up, Superbad, The Savages

Best Actor
Johnny Depp, Sweeney Todd
Ryan Gosling, Lars and the Real Girl
Tom Hanks, Charlie Wilsons War
Phillip Seymour Hoffman, The Savages
John C Reilly, Walk Hard
Reilly is the only surprise and he's got the December fresh-in-the-memory thing happening for him. But I'm still sad that Linney keeps getting shunned for The Savages when it's clearly her film.

Best Actress
Amy Adams, Enchanted
Nikki Blonsky, Hairspray
Helena Bonham-Carter, Sweeney Todd
Marion Cotillard, La Vie En Rose
Ellen Page, Juno
wow. I predicted this 5/5... and it was a tight field. They had to leave out Heigl (a typical Globe type girl), Nicole Kidman a favorite, Laura Linney for The Savages etcetera. I continue to be angry though that Cotillard is dubbed comedy/musical when she neither sings nor cracks jokes.

OTHER...

Best Director
Tim Burton, Sweeney Todd ,The Coen Bros, No Country For Old Men , Schnabel, The Diving Bell and Butterfly , Scott, American Gangster , Wright, Atonement
Good news for all of these best picture bids with Oscar

Best Supporting Actor
Casey Affleck, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Javier Bardem, No Country For Old Men , John Travolta Hairspray, Tom Wilkinson Michael Clayton
Almost the list I predicted. Not quite. Could it be the Oscar list? Why isn't von Sydow getting any traction?

Best Supporting Actress
Cate Blanchett, I'm Not There , Julia Roberts, Charlie Wilson's War , Saoirse Ronan, Atonement, Amy Ryan, Gone Baby Gone, Tilda Swinton, Michael Clayton
Will the Oscars also pull the genuflection to the return of Julia Roberts? I hope not but you never know.

Screenplay
Juno, No Country For Old Men, Atonement, The Diving Bell and Butterfly and Charlie Wilson's War
The only surprise her would be Diving Bell. Previously more honored for directorial and cinematographic choices

Score
Into the Wild, Grace Is Gone, The Kite Runner, Atonement, and Eastern Promises
Interesting. Not that Oscar will follow suit.

Foreign Film
4 Months 3 Weeks and 2 Days, The Diving Bell and Butterfly, Persepolis, Lust Caution and The Kite Runner
Won't look a thing like Oscar's list (different criteria) although I do expect that 4 Months is in... and possibly Persepolis (though they might not double dip there since it's also up for animated with Oscar voters

For complete nominations, go to the Golden Globe site. The Film Experience home base will be updated tomorrow. I've got screenings tonight. But discuss the bizarre Globe findings here.

I bow down Nathaniel. You were totally right, I was wrong. Good one on Actress Comedy.

boo no kidman! yay for Atonement love

"say what?"

What's so strange about the best picture m/c category? I had Enchanted but Across the Universe was my alternate. And yay for no Once.

Bad news for Into the Wild all around (sort of happy 'bout that)

And I totally guessed Reilly!

Happy about the Atonement love. I last-minute ditched McAvoy but am so glad he got in!

what great nominations that london critics have decided on

john c.reiley? did anyone see that coming?

adam k. said...

I knew Atonement would be huge. But I f***ed up a lot of other things. And BOOOO for Glenn saying "yay for no Once"!

I don't understand why they nominated critical and commercial failure Across the Universe when there was another very great musical they could've had.

I also don't understand what happened to the other categories and why they weren't announced with the major ones.

and i know its only tv, but how can James Gandolfini not get nominated for Best Actor in a Television Drama, absolute madness

Glenn Dunks said...

uh, me! I predicted Reilly! Also, the five movies I predicted for best picture drama (plus my alternate) made it in. Go me!

*sniff* Kidman loses out again..

*vomits* Travolta gets in...

Anonymous said...

Into the Wild deserved a Best Picture nomination - gutted about that. Does anyone know how Keener and Holbrook did in supporting?

Glenn Dunks said...

The HFPA website doesn't have the nominees up (!!!) and nobody seems to be able to tell us who the supporting nominees are apart from Cate Blanchett.

Adam, the HFPA are very very small so if even only about 40 members loved Across the Universe then it's easy to see how it got in over Once. People who like AtU love it.

Glenn Dunks said...

Tim Burton is the fifth directing nominee btw.

Blosky??? BLOWS CHUNKS

Anonymous said...

they're up on imdb now

Anonymous said...

Wow, they really didn't like Into the Wild then. Idiots.

Still I'm glad about Americn Gangster's mini-resurrection. Much better film than I was led to expect - one of the year's best edited for sure. Not enough for Ruby Dee to make it in though, damn them.

Roberts and Travolta getting in is just gross.

Hoffman and Blanchett's double dip is just greedy in a year like this. And this is coming from someone who loves both actors.

Glenn Dunks said...

Glad they kept Travolta in supporting where he belongs.

Also, I totally predicted Clint Eastwood would get nominated. It was foolish, I presume, to ever think they wouldn't.

Anonymous said...

I can't believe they would pick Nikki fucking Blonsky (my god, what a piece of atrocious, pandering trash that movie was) over Kidman, a perennial fave. It boggles the mind.

Glenn Dunks said...

Yikes, why is there so much hatred for Blonsky?

Glenn Dunks said...

Oh, I just realised they nominated Clint Eastwood twice. Oh man! Will their starf**king ever cease?

Anonymous said...

It's becausse she REALLY didn't deserve a nom when Linney and about 17 other more deserving women had to be snubbed for it

Glenn Dunks said...

Boo fucking hoo. They can go cry into their successful decades-long careers. Let Blonsky have her moment for crying out loud. If she gave a bad performance then there'd be reason to be peeved, but she was very good.

Or is it because she's fat?! I think Anonymous #129374 up there thinks she doesn't deserve a spot because she's overweight.

Anonymous said...

No it's definitely not because she's fat. But because her performance didn't wow me. And I'd expect a performance that makes a final 5 of the year to wow me. Never mind.

On the 'fat' issue - I hope she does decide to lose a few pounds at some point, if only for her health. For the same reason Victoria Beckham should gain a few. But anyway, each to her own.

Anonymous said...

Oh for chrissakes, I don't hate her because she's fat. I hate her because she gave an awful performances in an awful remake of a wonderful film.

c.p. iñor said...

I'm glad for Nikki, sad for Linney and whatever for Cotillard (I think she's the one getting the Linney spot).

Anonymous said...

Even though I think Linney and Kidman deserve recognition, I can't fault Blonsky for their snubs. I thought she was delightful, and exactly what she needed to be - the fun she's having is contagious.

I'd frame the question more like this: What the hell are Cotillard and Page doing there instead of those other deserving women?

I actually really liked Cotillard, but her performance doesn't belong in this category. And I like Page just fine, but there's something about that film as a whole that grates.

Ideally, I'd think the category would look like this (I'm throwing HBC in there giving her the benefit of the doubt, assuming she'll be great - if not, put Page there)

1. Laura Linney
2. Amy Adams
3. Nicole Kidman
4. Nikki Blonsky
5. Helena Bonham-Carter

Calum Reed said...

Loving all the Atonement noms. The Actress categories are SO good, although I'm sad for Laura Linney.

Actor is beginning to shape up nicely now. Five of McAvoy, Depp, Day Lewis, Washington, Mortenson, Langella and Clooney.

Anonymous said...

Nikki Blonsky. IT"S NOT THAT SERIOUS GET OVER IT. Some liked her performance & some didn't.

Nikki may be overweight, most women in Hollywood are underweight complain about that.

NATHANIEL R said...

i would be very surprised if Langella got any traction. it's an itty bitty film that they released in the thick of the behemoths

Anonymous said...

Nicole Kidman got SNUBBED! SO WHAT she already has a career. I'm glad Blonsky got in, she gave a charming performance.

Keira ( I like her) , Angelina & Nicole should gain a few pounds the anorexic look is not hot.

And big news for Mad Men, the best show on television.

I am so proud, sooooo proud, to co-write the only unofficial (not AMC) Mad Men blog on the Internet.

Yay.

Anonymous said...

No surprise for Across the Universe from me, there was a lot of hate, but there was also a lot of love!
I am happy with that category!
Agree about Cotillard, and I am VERY upset about Linney.
Blonsky or Page over Linney is unacceptable!
I'm also no fan of Clooney's.

NATHANIEL R said...

the actress drama thing is pretty interesting because so many of them look weak for OSCAR NODS but then, the category doesn't usually fill up with the comedy/musical players... so it's curious

BLANCHETT, FOSTER and KNIGHTLEY all get a nice boost from this... even if they'll still have a tight race between them for a fifth slot. I know that people think Knightley is in... but she really is not in very much of Atonement so if Oscar isn't totally gungho for it, she'll be the first element to drop off.

I'm so happy for The Great Debaters, American Gangster & Eastern Promises. I know they may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I liked them. I doubt they will get a best pic nod.

Good for Blonsky. Too bad for Linney. GO Jodie.

Most of all I'm happy for Viggo.

Nat- Patiently waiting on your Atonement Grade?

Anonymous said...

can't wait to hear what you think of sweeny todd. i saw it last week.

Anonymous said...

I have only a few problems with the noms and they have been voiced already... but here goes another voice in the wilderness...

Horrible that Into the Wild did not get Pic, Dir, actor, supp. actor

Linney should have definitely been in.. although her performances, as great as they are, don't stretch her acting chops... she plays same type of role often

Very happy that Eastern Promises and Viggie got in... did not think it would happen
Charlie Wilson's War... I don't know ( star appeal )??? Won't work if the writer's strike is still on... not many stars will cross that line to appear.

I´m sad about Kidman, Jennifer Leigh and Linney, but hell yeah for Foster, she is amazing in the sh** the brave one!

Anonymous said...

I'm really happy for Reilly. He's a talented guy and seems to be having fun with the lighter stuff. Good for him.

Anonymous said...

I also think the man, I believe his name is Donald Pinsent, who played Julie Christie's husband was as deserving of a nom as she was...

lylee said...

Re: Langella, he still has a sporting chance, though it's a tough field. If Ryan Gosling managed to snag a Best Actor nom for wee-itty-bitty "Half Nelson," anything's possible. Or did Gosling just get traction cause he's a fresh young thing? But Langella has the veteran-who-deserves-acknowledgment thing going for him. Hollywood may want to recognize that.

I'm mildly pro-"Across the Universe," so have no probs with that nom. But I am sad to see "Once" so roundly snubbed. And sad for Linney, too, though I amazingly still have yet to see "The Savages."

Loved "Hairspray," didn't hate Travolta, but don't think he came close to deserving a nom, either. Ugh.

Yay for Viggo indeed. And yay for "Mad Men"!

John T said...

Blosky and Travolta's nominations are a bit of a stretch-it was fun, sure, but award-worthy, not so much. I would have also dumped Cotillard, as I totally agree with Nat about her not singing or being funny-I don't think she should be there for either category, but if she has to be, it should be for drama.

And for those who argue that Kidman and Linney shouldn't be sad, the Golden Globes (and other awards shows) aren't supposed to be about helping careers, they're supposed to be about honoring the best.

SOURCE: Reuters

"In a first for the Golden Globe awards, which are given out by some 90 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the top category of best film drama was shared by seven nominees instead of the usual five.

"That tells us it was a very good year for dramas, and it was very difficult for us to pick the nominees," HFPA president Jorge Camara said. He said that three movies tied for the fifth position among dramas, leading to the seven nominees."

liz, thanks but Kidman looks just fine, to put her in the same skinny category as Keira snd Jolie is ridiculous. Kidman was skinny in 2005, I wouldn't call her skinny now. When she starts looking like all head and ribs then that's something to gripe about and yes, Blonsky needs to loose weight, she is what is considered fat. Considering the description in USA Today about how she gussed plates of food down her throat then I'd say it is time to start checking the scales. She is not a kid.

NATHANIEL R said...

Rik,
i would disagree that Linney isn't stretching. This year alone The Savages and Jindabyne are practically polar opposite performances and both are great acting.

i'm not sure why she can't get traction but they only see to like her when she's a can't miss: YOU CAN COUNT ON ME or in a typical Oscar role: KINSEY

LYLEE -as for Gosling. I think the major difference there is that Gosling already had traction before any of the awards were announced. Some people didn't believe it because he was a) young and b) the film was tiny... but he was always one of the most acclaimed actors that year. Langella... people are just starting to hear about the film.

I'm so confused why the small films wait? Small films without the huge stars... how can they get attentino in December when everyone wants to talk about people like DEPP and ROBERTS and HANKS.

it's way smarter to try for traction early and sort of cement your acclaim before the race truly begins:

i.e.COTILLARD this year
GOSLING last year
TERRENCE HOWARD the year before that.

if you're not already A list but trying to get there giving the most acclaimed performance from earlier in the year is a really smart way to go.

Nathaniel: Atonement A-/B+?! I was so sure you'd be giving it an A, especially after you said you loved it.

Anonymous said...

John T- What is best is BASED ON OPINIONS.

I didn't like Kidman or Leigh in Margot at the Wedding & That is MY OPINION. Hell , I didn't like the Departed, but did I cry about it no. If you get so angry about awards WHY WATCH them? Apparently they thought Blonsky was better than Kidman that is THEIR opinion.

NATHANIEL R said...

a-/b+ is love from me.

I generally don't give out "A"s (2001 had the most "A"s I've ever given as I recall. A- generally means you're one of my BP nominees and B+ you usually have a shot at the top ten list ;)

Anonymous said...

Yeah A- is love, but B+ too? Isn't that more 4 star territory (albeit the upper-reaches of) - and really liked as opposed to loved?

Anonymous said...

NAthaniel,

I did not see the second movie you mentioned... I just adore her, but can sort of see why she might get lost in the crowd sometime ... even if she deserves the noms

NATHANIEL R said...

if you look on my list of grades you'll see what i mean.

if i give something a B+ i generally love it (think Michael Clayton) but it might not end up being a favorite (i.e. it's no Moulin Rouge or Volver or what have you...)

grades are stupid in some ways but i just use it as a ballpark and because people like to know

People are so quick to complain about someone being overweight, but ignore the ones who are underweight. I agree that Nikki should lose some weight for her health, but there are PLENTY of people in Hollywood who are in dire need of food.

Nicole Kidman is 5'10 and according to the weight charts at my Doctor's office. She should at least be 138 pounds ( I'm 5'10). If she is under that then she is not fine, she is underweight.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the link Nathaniel. Been looking for your 2007 graded list for ages and could never find it. Didn't realise you liked Once and Ratatouille that much! And surprised Lust, Caution isn't in the As because, again, thought you *loved* it.

Also Liz, I'm 6' and 145 pounds. Does that make me underweight? Cos I sure don't look or feel it - and I eat. A lot.

Anonymous said...

Amir

No you're fine. Not underweight :-)

I just get irritated when people call, Kate Winslet, Kelly Clarkson, Beyonce , Tyra & Britney fat. I only like three of the ones mentioned.btw.

DO people realize that these women are more than likely at their right weight, when people like Nicole, Angelina, Keira, & Paris Hilton may possibly be underweight.

Anonymous said...

Kelly Clarkson, Bouncy, Tyra and Kate Winslet et al are definitely not fat - they're just normal in their own shapes.

But I also think - and what I meant by my own weight comment - is that maybe Nicole, Keira, Angelina, Paris and the others are also normal for their own make-ups. Paris Hilton is always eating at In-n-Out isn't she? And Keira has explicitly and candidly talked about her weight/metabolism/body shape in the media and stated that she is healthy and normal the way she is.

Anonymous said...

And Nicole was definitely rocking the curves (in a good way - unlike Blonsky) in that slinky gold dress in The Golden Compass.

NATHANIEL R said...

i'm kind of surprised to see the "weight" issue bloom here. i mean Tracey Turnblad is SUPPOSED TO BE FAT. That's the starting point of the whole thing. Hefty Hideaway and all that...

i think everyone can agree that Hollywood starlets are by and large too thin... a weird byproduct of fashion trends and Hollywoods natural competitive drive and abusive psychology

or sumthin'

Anonymous said...

I'm not saying it's wrong to be skinny and a few pounds under or over weight won't kill you, but curvier women seem to get most of the hate. I.E. The recent Jennifer Love Hewitt situation.

Not to say that Extremely skinny women don't get their fair share of bashing, but that's only until you start seeing their bones.

Anonymous said...

Am I a bad fan if I dont want Keira Knightley nominated for the Oscars this year? Not for this performance anyway. People will be bitching and whining, thats it undeserved (again) and i doubt it would adavance her career. Give the fifth spot to someone else.

She has the Duchess coming out next year opposite Ralph Fiennes, which i have high hopes for. Coincidently the director is a rising talent, as well.

Anonymous said...

...although i do want her to get a BAFTA nom. I found it sad that she was snubbed in her own backyard.

Calum Reed said...

Langella has been getting love off the critics. I admit it's a tiny film but it's possible he could place #1 on a few ballots. Given that the rest of the main contenders, with the exception of McAvoy, are really dark as characters, I think he's less comparable. Whether it's enough to stand out I don't know.

Anonymous said...

liz, so you don't know what her weight is but qualified her as anorexic in your "Keira ( I like her) , Angelina & Nicole should gain a few pounds the anorexic look is not hot."

Yes, she is 5 Foot 10 inches but she hardly looks like a stick from her recent appearances at the New Line Gala in Oct, MATW and TGC premieres last month and wherever she is hiding in Oz.

As for fat women getting the brunt, since when? skinny women are the butt of jokes on magazine covers and diet shows, most gossip shows have programmes on skinny celeb that they bring out as of when, I have yet to see programmes on fat celebs anywhere, how many times as Queen Latifah been on the cover of a tabloid magazine for her size? I will say most people find it easy to get on the "you are too skinny" trail, it is the sport of the day.

lylee said...

Nathaniel: can't argue with you about releasing movies like "Starting Out" earlier in the year rather than during the crazy season. I mean, it's not like it couldn't have come out earlier...it bowed at Sundance in JANUARY, for crying out loud, though it didn't get a lot of attention there (except from me) and I'm guessing had trouble finding a distributor. Still, it was slated for release earlier in the fall, and somehow got pushed to the FRIDAY AFTER THANKSGIVING in N.Y. and L.A. only. Talk about poor handling. Langella's performance is gold, and they've just been sitting on it.

Ok, off soapbox now.

Anonymous said...

I guess one nice side effect of the Globes and BFCA picks is that, if the trends continue, we'll be in for an exciting season, even it's ultimately exciting because they make stupid choices (like going wild for Charlie Wilson's War). Hopefully, anyway.

Anonymous said...

Bad fan Zen, bad fan! If Knightley can proudly pronounce that she's the youngest ever recipient of two lead acting Oscars, that should silence even more of the detractors. They'll always be out for Keira - because she was a shit actress when she was 15/16. She had to learn her craft in the public eye (as Joe Wright once said), and many just don't want to know that she's since blossomed into a world-class thesp.

Her work as Cecilia is always going to seem slighter than her Elizabeth Bennet (though the Atonement performance is better, I think). The latter is widely regarded as the most multifaceted heroine in English literature. Cecilia, well, isn't. That doesn't mean Keira's Cecilia has to be less resonant.

Once was unjustly snubbed in the Best Picture - Musical/Comedy and Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical/Comedy, for Glen Hansard, categories. Laura Linney was horribly snubbed of a nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical/Comedy for The Savages, which also should have gotten a screenplay nomination and Best Picture. Across the Universe and Charlie Wilson's War? No no no. Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and John Travolta should not be on this list. The biggest travesty of all? John C Reilly in Walk Hard. WHAT THE FUCK? That movie looks like a piece of shit and he looks fucking stupid in it. Everytime I see the ads, I cringe.

Anonymous said...

As a fan, i wouldnt want her to have to point out Oscar noms to gain respect as an actress (whats a nom worth now, anyway?)Its so political.

I'd want her body of work to speak for itself, and she's definately started doing that with Atonement. I love her professionalism and committment to her craft, more than anything.

I think with her upcoming roles (and with a different director), she has the opportunity to really solidify her status as a "world-class thesp". She doesnt need this nom.

Glenn Dunks said...

Are you guys aware that some people are naturally skinny? I'm underweight, yet I eat like a horse. Bodytype plays a great deal in this sort of thing. Keira is an ectomorph and as a result can't gain weight easily. She's never been anything other than skinny, unlike people like Lindsay Lohan whose weight has obviously fluctuated.

Anyway.

"And for those who argue that Kidman and Linney shouldn't be sad, the Golden Globes (and other awards shows) aren't supposed to be about helping careers, they're supposed to be about honoring the best."

Wouldn't it make sense to think "hey, they could've nominated big stars like Nicole Kidman and Laura Linney, but instead they chose the girl Hairspray, they must've just liked her more". Or is that such a foreign concept that - SHOCK! - other people liked Nikki's performance more than you did.

I think the world would implode if everyone realised that.

PTA was snubbed for Directing as well? Ugh. But I can't complain on this one, because Coen's were phenomenal, Scott did good work with 'American Gangster', Schnabel and Burton's respective films I've yet to see, and Wright tried his damndest to make 'Atonement' work.
I still say Penn should've taken a spot here.

yeah i covered awards bodies Clint fetish last year (which got me into all sorts of trouble --his fans are protective)

but what's really distressing this year is that he's being honored for composing scores. I think it's debatable that he's a world class director BUT he's obviously a VERY GOOD DIRECTOR. I can't be so charitable when it comes to the music he writes for his films. I often think they're the worst part of his films. I wish he'd farm out that job.

I haven't seen "Charlie Wilsons War" so I can't judge Julia Roberts' performance. But all I know is that the HFP didn't nominate her for her GORGOES performance in "Closer" (also nominated by Mike Nichols) 2 years ago, which was a shame, so maybe this is an attempt to excuse.

Anonymous said...

I'll admit, I wanted to see Nicole Kidman at the Globes again. Jennifer Jason Leigh too for that matter (now is when I'm starting to think that she won't make it to the Oscars unless SAG intervenes next week), but I won't blame Nikki Blonsky for it. "Hairspray" was a great film, and John Travolta even deserved his nod. They could have seen fit to make the category six nominees to add Hal Holbrook, but that's another story. And as many people that hate the Globes for being starf******, I still love 'em for their oddball choices and the momentum that they can give films and television shows that wouldn't have it otherwise. And they're one of the few people that recognized "Eastern Promises" and "Lars and the Real Girl", so major points to them for that.

And for the television side, let me just say a big hell yeah to the nominations for "Mad Men", "Damages", "Extras", "Californication", Ricky Gervais, Jon Hamm, Jeremy Piven, Kevin Dillon, Glenn Close, Holly Hunter, America Ferrera, "Pushing Daisies", "Longford", Andy Serkis, Samantha Morton, Katherine Heigl, Tina Fey, and Steve Carell. There's potential for great winners from this group of nominees, so I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with for their winners.

Anonymous said...

"Knocked Up" should be in Musical/Comedy over freakin' "Across the Universe". I know that the Globes love their Musicals, which is fine and dandy, but "Knocked Up" was the mainstream comedy of the year (THE YEAR OF APATOW!), and that would have been the perfect place to reward that, since the Oscars won't touch it with a ten-foot pole. Bad call, Globes.

Anonymous said...

The P. T. Anderson snub is the most egregious in years. It makes the Globes and the HFPA's noms for Wright and Scott in particular stink like a big old steaming pile of dog poop. For shame.

Atonement's a soggy freaking mess and Wright's the biggest David Lean manque this side of ... um, Dickie Attenborough.

Anonymous said...

Whats wrong with David Lean???

He gave us one masterpiece, after the other.

So, contrary to some people's opinions on the film, Charlie Wilson's War is inarguably a major critical hit (94% on rotten tomatoes, making it top-five among non-documentary major studio releases. That plus hype plus star power seems like an obvious Best Picture Nomination. But Nat and several other awardites are still holding out on it. What piece of the puzzle am I missing? Is it the fact that it's a dramedy?
