Reason #1,237 Why The Writers Strike Needs To End Soon

I need my weekly fix of Pushing Daisies. No interruptions!

I need it as badly as Hollywood needs to start casting, rewarding, understanding and utilizing the wealth of talented musical theater performers out there just itching for an opportunity to strut their stuff as superbly as Kristin Chenowith gets to on Pushing Daisies or as riotously as Jane Krakowski does on 30 Rock. Which is to say, I need my weekly fix of Pushing Daisies a whole freaking lot.

Haha. I'm incredibly please you like Pushing Daisies. It's amazing. And Chenowith is fabulous. Why the hell didn't SHE get a Globe nomination?

because Hollywood is STILL not rewarding musical theater people. I mean JANE KRAKOWSKI passed over for a nomination at the Emmys? are they freaking insane? I routinely laugh so hard at her antics during 30 Rock that I have to surpress giggles during entire commercial breaks.

last week her 'infant jealousy' line reading on 30 Rock was one of the funniest things i've heard in my whole life.

I agree that Chenowith deserved a supporting nom, but let us celebrate the fact that the show itself and it's two leads were all recognized. No negativity! The show hasn't even aired a full season!

But I'm with you on the writer's strike mucking things up; besides the fact that I'm terribly worried its chances of even coming back will be troubled by this break, I just want its particular brand of hilarity at a constant weekly stream. Free Digby!

Loved this moment on Pushing Daisies, but I loved the Birdhouse in your Soul moment even more 'cause it included Ellen Greene. (Not to mention her moment to shine with Morning has Broken). Oh, how much do I love this show, let me count the ways...

I finally caught up with 30 Rock which I've been meaning to sit down and give a shot for a good year now. I'm a quick addict so I plowed through the entire first season over two nights and what has come of the second season over a third night. I have admired Krakowski's scene stealing abilities since Ally McBeal and she has even more presence here. The cast is solid but she and Baldwin kill and this is a show that should be seen as a benchmark when it comes to using guest stars.

I'll get back to you on Pushing Daisies next year.

This demonstrates beautifully the sort of thing that was discussed in the Sweeney Todd threads - that acting and singing are NOT mutually exclusive skills. (Compare this daft rendering to the original.)

you meant "deft" right? and yes, thank you for the correlation to the other thread. I don't know why people persist in this insane notion that musical stars can't act.

film/tv stars who can do both very well:
TONI COLLETTE
SARAH JESSICA PARKER
CATHERINE ZETA JONES
JANE KRAKOWSKI
KRISTIN CHENOWITH
MANDY PATINKIN
MICHELLE PFEIFFER
HUGH JACKMAN
HEATH LEDGER (supposedly...)
ALAN CUMMING
GOLDIE HAWN
MERYL STREEP
BETTE MIDLER
MATTHEW BRODERICK
TAYE DIGGS
BEBE NEUWIRTH

i don't know about their singing but they're supposedly great dancers
CLAIRE DANES
CHARLIZE THERON

minor film/tv actors who are best known on stage and really deserve a bigger shot at movie musical fame:

CHEYENNE JACKSON
DONNA MURPHY
TONYA PINKINS
AUDRA MCDONALD
CRAIG BIERKO

stage only and I don't know why she hasn't been in anything else to speak of because people go crazy for her --especially the teenagers and Hollywood is always trying to court teens-- she's pretty and she's amazing as a singer

SUTTON FOSTER

and that's just scratching the surface. Pet topic of mine. And why I get so angry that Hollywood insists that there are no triple threats.

The huge stardom thing is always trotted out as an excuse but really that's so lame. Mary Poppins was JULIE ANDREWS first movie. Very few people are born über famous... there's very few Liza Minellis ;). It's specific movies and roles that make actors famous. We need braver producers and directors who are willing to give lesser knowns a shot.

i forgot
ZOOEY DESCHANEL, SCARLETT JOHANSSON, and BRITTANY MURPHY who can all sing too.

umm... what about Winslet?

In terms of Kristin Chenoweth not getting a nomination at the Globes, its mostly because of their ridiculous requirements for the supporting actor category which forces them to choose 5 picks from Drama, Comedy AND Mini-Series categories. I fully expect her to get an Emmy nomination next year.

Nate, don't forget Sara Ramirez.

I also miss Pushing Daisies already. This show better come back after the strike. If it gets the post full season pick-up order strike-induced axe (like Dirty Sexy Money apparently did), I'm going to be devastated. It's funny, unique, sly, witty, and a host of other good adjectives. And I haven't even mentioned Chenoweth.
