How I Feel / How I Wish I Felt

...illustrated without restraint by Julianne Moore. (Though in truth I've swung both ways today...even in the same half hour. No mood lasts forever!). How's your weekend been? Seen anything good. Which side of Julianne's coin are you this weekend?

Her face is such a marvelous, elastic instrument. Like that scene in The Hours; she's walking away from her son and starts sobbing, then instantly turns around and contorts her face into a pained smile and blows a kiss. So duplicitous.

I watched "Bring It On" for your Hit Me With Your Best Shot series and got two screenshots I love! Hard to narrow it down to only two.. And I had never seen the movie before - love it!

I saw Life During Wartime this evening. It was wonderfully cast. Still thinking about the film.

The lady on the left looked like Laura Linney.

Anyway, Despicable Me. Saw it with dad. Boring first half, awesome sarcastic second half.

Next week is Top Hat on the bog screen, A Face in the Crowd on TCM, and other movies that I have to see at home. Effing work. Sorry fo the overshare, just had to plug
A face in the Crowd so that I and a few Best Shot series people can experience and get screen caps wherever they can later.

I watched 'Ball of Fire.' Stanwyck is great, plus I found the nerdy professors hilarious. Tomorrow, if there is time, I'll watch 'Thirst'.

My mood is much more boring than either of those pictures.

Finally saw 'Monster'. I've sort of been saving it, in a very self-harming manner. LOVED IT. But it did leave me in a weird funk for about an hour. Definitely not a feel good movie.

Julianne is always a thrill to look, specially when she's thinking or just sad.

Saw "London River". Brenda Blethyn could be an awards contender if it gets a proper release and "Life During Wartime", pretty good but not Todd's best.

Peggy Sue -- i think they gave her a one week qualifier in LA last year, which means she wouldn't be eligible this year.

Had a bit of a stressful week, so I decided to be lazy today and just spend Sunday watching DVDs. I started off with "The Thief of Bagdad" (the 1940 one), I loved it as a child and I still think it's wonderful. I'm probably going to watch "Y tu mamá también" next.

Julianne really does look like Laura Linney on the left.

I saw 'I Am Love.' Lovely.

I have seen "La Vie en Rose" yesterday again and I can't help thinking Marion Cotillard's performance is not only the best of the last decade, but also one of the best I've ever seen!

A good friend of mine left the country to go find another good friend in Berlin to start a business together. I'm happy for them but.. you know :(

So it's neither of these feelings.

I watched Inception instead of The Earrings of Madame de... and I'm really ashamed but I hope I'll watch the classic tonight. Inception was, well, mediocre.

I watched Blade Runner for the first time on Friday at my grandma's. It was The Final Cut and I must say, it is as awesome as everyone says it is.

I hope everything gets better for ya, Nate!

My weekend? Probably MOORE in An Ideal Husband. A little self satisfied. Enjoying it a little too much. Didn't accomplish what I set out to do, but the stakes weren't that high. (Also, checking imdb.com for Moore's movies, I chuckled to find out she's acting in a movie called Crazy, Stupid, Love. It reads like a mock-take of the recent Roberts movie, no?)

Watched Soul Kitchen. Akin is rapidly moving up the ranks of great directors.

Also, Nat, I don't know if you read reviews before you see a film, but Scott Foundas over at FILM COMMENT unleashed a huge rave for THE SOCIAL NETWORK.

Those people who complained about casting Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man really are looking dumber and dumber, aren't they?

I went away and bought a heap DVDs this weekend. I Heart Huckabees, The Big Lebowski and Bring it on (among others). I saw it there and remembered your series and figured it was meant to be. I'm thinking once I get my jobs for the weekend done I'll settle in and watch all three.

Her performance in Blindness is of such subtle brilliance, it's annoying that it got zero attention in 2008/09 awards race because it was so cool to hate that movie back then.
Speaking of Julianne Moore: Isn't it strange that Focus Features didn't expand The Kids Are All Right any further? Was it really that disappointing in the first week of wide release?
Because after many reviews attested it "universal appeal" etc., I thought it could be more successful financially, a la Little Miss Sunshine or Brokeback Mountain or even just (500) Days of Summer.

jean-paul, yes - the first week of wide release was disappointing. They expanded it a little too quickly (is the now common thought) and word of mouth wasn't allowed to catch-up.

OK, but I don't get why they cut down the number of theatres so rapidly and thus don't even allow word of the mouth to catch up. There were other movies with much worse theatre averages playing at a lot more places.

jean paul & arkaan -- my personal theory is that INCEPTION got in the way. Before Inception opened, the only thing in theaters to excite people who like movies expressly for adults was TKAAR... and then Inception sucked the air out of the conversations.

which is sad because TKAAR is better ;)

I was generally more the latter than the former but i'm sorry to hear you were feeling down.

I caught up with Paranormal Activity - pah.

I don't why I feel the need to catch up with stuff I know won't be that great - too much of a completist.

Also if you have any thoughts on 1975 Nathaniel, let me know on my latest post:)

Saw "Winter's Bone" ... what a truly riveting film this was. The directing and acting were sensational ... I got so involved in the movie that I began crying with interspersed scenes of the animals and the cutting down of the trees.

I did not stop until I got home!!! Have not been affected by a movie like that for a long time.
