jaja.. terrific movie, one of my personal fav. Bening was stunning, pitty she didn't won the Oscar for this role, lost against La Swank.. her personal nemesis..hahah. Who could say lost two Oscars, because of the same person..haha..well Annete Bening sure can.

This performance is so bad, so cartoonish. Bening should watch some tv to learn how to play a troubled 40-something American woman. In American Beauty she is always hysterical, hatefully over the top.

i re watched this a week ago and it was cooper's and spacey's perf's that struck me as the best along with suvari who was never emntioned anywhere, bening seemed ott and having since paraded the same sort of schtick in running with scissors & being julia moved down to 3 on my 99 list although i do enjoy this perf and love her in certain parts she isn't in it enough and is given some terrible overacting scenes this rethink allowed kate winslet in holy smoke to rise to 2 and yes swank a v deserved winner.

I finally saw this movie about five years ago and it did absolutely nothing for me whatsoever.

janice i think you had to be there.

I just watched it again for the BPFTOI series and it really does feel like something that's absolutely locked into the moment it came out. very strange to view it now I think.

No one cared about terrorism or China or hurricanes. It was the end of the 90's and everyone was enjoying (yet not being fulfilled by) middle-class prosperity.

It was the perfect time for a movie like American Beauty.

I still say it's an amazing movie, yet is one of those that people who LOVED it at the time now claim it's awful. *sigh* The people who thought they were being hip by liking it now think they're hip for not liking it, yet they were never hip in the first place because to be in the majority is not hip. No? :P

Nevertheless, that paper bag bit was wrong no matter what year you're viewing it in.

This makes 10 for a 10 movie.

That sounded much more clever in my head...

the z your comment made me happy because even on posts with 50+ comments I've never received that obnoxious internet common cliche of someone yelling "FIRST!"

but you've called 10th, so that warms the cockles of my heart. (and there's more on AMERICAN BEAUTY coming later this week in the Best Pictures From the Outside In series)

(p.s. to borrow from yet another movie "this one goes to 11")
