True. True. False.

True: Kissing is beautiful
Even More True: especially when its onscreen
Truer Still: Especially if it's man on man / girl on girl / star on star. (I like reflective surfaces. What can I say?)

Obscure Truth: This friendly photo of Jonny Lee Miller and Jude Law always delights.
Strange But True:
Sometimes I feel like I'll never recover from watching Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal make out.
Resulting Truth: That kiss made it easier to imagine any number of other pairs of male movie stars kissing each other.

Commonly Known Truth: I heart Ewan McGregor
Lesser Known Truth: I like Jim Carrey
FALSE: I want to see Ewan McGregor and Jim Carrey kiss.

<--- This movie is worrisome. Why are they making this movie I Love You Phillip Morris? I haven't talked about it at all -- or shown this picture you've probably already seen -- because I've been trying to pretend it doesn't exist. Mainstream Hollywood cannot be trusted to make gay movies. Especially comedies. They just can't. You need a brilliant queer fringe dweller or an emotionally mature world class auteur or other types who aren't worried about the delicate sensibilities of easily offended boring moviegoers who can barely handle it when gay is even mentioned and won't be seeing any decent movie made in which men smooch each other anyway. Is this going to be another I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry because who needs that?

I saw the rather elegant picture and actually thought the sensibilities of Lee or Van Sant seemed more at play than "Hey check it out! Two dudes!" but then I checked the directors' past credits: Bad Santa and Cats & Dogs.

I'm not holding my breath. Then again, Carrey has surprised me before, and McGregor seems way too classy to pull an offensive stunt. We will see I suppose.

Remember when this would have been hot, circa say 2000?

Just curious: do you think Brokeback made it so that Gyllenhaal will never "play" gay again? How tragic for so many reasons....

I have the same reaction to it -- I should be excited for it, but I'm really, really not.

That Jude Law/Jonny Lee Miller photo is a post unto itself! But you're right, I'm more excited by refreshing that image in my browser than I am to ever see this Phillip Morris movie.

I don't know about the film but I'll say this. I soo agree about Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal kissing. I mean, that scene when they meet after a long time and hide to kiss, oh my God!!!

Gays should be (and usually are)able to laugh at themselves, provided the laughs are of the 'poking fun at gay sterotypes' and not the 'ewwww, homos' sort. There's a major difference between gay jokes and homophobic jokes, and I trust/hope the writers of "Bad Santa" to not make another "Chuck and Larry."

where did the law/miller smooch take place?

That Jude Law kiss-pic rocks. God bless the British.

I’m not quite sure how to feel about the Morris film. At first glance, I was rather intrigued. Even more so later by that lovely picture. But to know it’s coming from those responsible for BAD SANTA… hmmmm. I have hope in that McGregor seems far too gay friendly to pull anything downright offensive. Just have to wait and see. At least we can add Carrey+McGregor to the gay-for-pay couples list.

As for the “Brokeback” kiss, well, that moment of swooning romantic abandon was… utterly transcendent. Watching it unfold on the big screen was a magical cinematic experience- one I’ll cherish forever in my film loving heart.

to Billy d;

(On Gyllenhaal playing gay again)

You know, it'd be so wonderful if he did. But I wouldn't hold it against him if he dosen't. He already gave us (to put it mildly) quite a special gift with “Jack Twist”.

As a straight male the kiss in Brokeback Mountain is definantly one of the greatest kisses in movie history. It's pretty perfect.

I'm not understanding the excess of "Bad Santa" hate... didn't we all like it when it came out 5 years ago?

From what Ive heard, 'I Love You Philip Morris' is based on avery touching, funny and not at all homophobic book. Unless they "chuck and larry" it up, I think it could be an interesting attempt at a mainstream "gay" movie. Lets see how it all plays out though.

I haven't seen it and don't recall the critical reception, but Bad Santa was a subversive take on the holiday, wasn't it?

At any rate - lots of directors have been "guns for hire" by the studios; it doesn't mean they necessarily lack talent, intelligence, empathy, whatever. It doesn't even necessarily mean they are heterosexual.

Now, if you told me the director of "Wild Hogs" was helming this one, I'd really be worried.

i agree that we should wait and see --you always should unless, say, the given director or star or whatever has done the exact same mistake before and it seems obvious that repetition is in order.

i'm just nervous. From the costumes to the stars (Rodrigo Santoro doesn't exactly take flattering off heteronormative roles does he? I mean I haven't seen Carandiru but I have seem 300...) it just seems iffy.

I think the thing with Bad Santa was that it took stabs at everybody so, while it was funny, a whole movie of jokes about how hilarious homosexuality is could easily get on one's nerves.

Having said that, it's encouraging that they actually released a publicity still featuring Carrey and McGregor nearly kissing. I don't believe the makers of Chuck and Larry did that.

Not only did "Chuck and Larry" not do that, they shot the one potential gay kiss in the film in slow motion like a horror movie moment (as my audience shrieked in revulsion) before Dan Aykroyd interrupts, sparing us the terrible fate of having to watch two men kiss.

I want to see Ewan and Jude kiss in a film...hehehe...but I'm dead serious...
