Ménage à trois "A Dangerous Method"

Eeep!

Viggo Mortensen as Sigmund Freud. Put me on the couch.

Keira Knightley as Sabina and Michael Fassbender as Carl Jung.

Yes, It's VIGGO (my vote for the most consistently brilliant 50something male actor working), Keira, and the wonderful Michael Fassbender in David Cronenberg's Psychiatrists In Love. er... The Dangerous Method. I once saw a play about these three characters (not the Christopher Hampton play "Talking Cure" that this is based on) and I remember nothing about it other than that it was great subject matter but I was too drowsy to focus.

Cronenberg is a true original. I feel as if I have no idea what to expect from him here and I like it like that, I do. I shall psycho-analyze these new photos all day. Join me.

I know I'll be alone on this but I would've preferred Rosamund Pike instead of Keira Knightley.

I'm mentally disturbed. Only these three altogether can cure me. :P

Not Sabrina... Sabina.

I've never seen either staged, but I've read both Hampton's "The Talking Cure" and Snoo Wilson's "Sabina"... I would say "Sabina" is the stronger work, but "The Talking Cure" lends itself more easily to a conventional film.

I've been anticipating this baby for a while - if the screenplay stays grounded, it can't fail surely?!

I'm sure it will be easily way better than italian film on the same subject: Roberto Faenza's THE SOUL KEEPER, starring Emilia Fox as Sabina and Iain Glen as Jung (Freud wasn't featured in the movie)

Cronenberg+Keira+Viggo+Fassbender= can't wait!!!

Pike is 31 years old... Sabina is around 18 in the film.

Anyway, no praiseworthy adjectives in front of Keira's name, eh? ;)

She looks fantastic in these photos - clingy, disheveled, a tad bit crazed... I hope she translates this all onto screen. Until this year, it's been since Atonement since she's gotten any sort of hype, and now she's garnered herself great reviews for NLMG and early fantastic ones for Last Night. I hope she continues the trend with London Boulevard and A Dangerous Method. And I truly believe this could be *her* film - she'll supposedly be the center of consciousness and I think she'll have the most interesting character of the trio. Bottom line, it *should* be her best performance to date - she's never worked with such a fascinating director and her character is full of complexity.

Michael Fassbender looks like William Hurt in that photo.

OT: John C Reilly has replaced Matt Dillon in God of Carnage.

Sara -- not alone. Pike is like one of my new favorites. I want to see more and more of her. Loved her in Made in Dagenham.

Some weird comments here.

Is it that you want Rosamund Pike cast in every single role there is?

Or do you just want her to replace Keira Knightley in every role she happens to get so that she'll never work again?

Or is there something you know about this particular role which would have made it perfect for her in spite of her age? Have you perhaps read the script?

What next? Clint Eastwood should have been Freud?

anon -- i can't speak for Sara but i'm speaking generally that i have a mad movie crush on Rosamund. This happens to everyone who is lucky. of course i end up hating it if Hollywood casts the same person in everything. it's SO boring, no matter who it is.

as for Keira I have nothing against her. But alas, if it's age you're concerned with she's also a touch old for it now ;) being only 6< Pike and 7>Sabina.

Danielle -- i'm excited to see Keira in London Blvd. I'm not sure why as i know little about the film. But I guess i'm always intrigued to see famous actresses play famous actresses and I'm curious how her chemistry with Farrell will be.

Sabine isn't 18 throughout the story - that's the starting point.

Knightley fits the required age range a lot better than Pike. And it's been a lot easier to see Pike in the Cinema the last few years than Knightley so I don't see that as an argument.

What about Lohan? She's been missing a bit. If only they had cast her :-P

wait. how is VIGGO losing the poll now. VIGGOOOOOOooooooooo

Responding to the OT: If true, Mr. Reilly is bouncing back to serious stuff after that "low comedy" phase from 06-08. (Check it Out is weird, but not vulgar, and he has a Miguel Arteta comedy and We Need to Talk About Kevin as his next two films.)

@Sara - I LOVE Rosamund Pike and think she deserves to be as big a star as Keira. That being said, I love me some KK more, even when mostly everyone I know hates her, so I can't say I would replace her with Rosamund. But it's great to see Pike's popularity increasing, she was so deserving of an Oscar nod for her work in An Education and I also found her work in The Libertine to be quite strong. She'll get her due...I hope.

Love me some Keira Knightley; glad to see her back to appearing in a lot of films, though tragically she appears to have gotten stuck in her time machine again (she spent 2005-2009 trapped in it).

Island Liberal -

If you're talking about Keira's penchant for period pieces, her next 3 out of 4 films are not period: Never Let Me Go, Last Night, and London Boulevard.

Nathaniel -

I'm excited for London Boulevard as well - I've heard good early word from test screenings. It's being released in the UK on Nov 26 but unfortunately it'll probably getting relatively small distribution/media attention. Hopefully it'll fare better in the US next year.

1. Knightley floored me in Never Let Me Go. She's got more tools as an actress than I thought (even though I adored her in Atonement).

2. Between Viggo and Fassbdender? You know, I really wish Viggo had a slightly better second half of the decade. Because LOTR + a Cronenberg masterpiece should really be unbeatable. But Fassbender gave a mindbogglingly intense performance in Hunger, was delightfully clever and suave in Inglourious Basterds, and was awesome in Fish Tank. I think that "Priest v. Prisoner" scene in Hunger ranks as the single finest scene of acting from that last decade. But don't underestimate the mindboggling awesomeness that LOTR is

What Dimitra said. But barring that, I'll toss my vote to Viggo.

Pike has been in more movies than Keira lately and Keira has also been taking the backseat lately. I don't see what Pike has to do with Knightley other than they starred in Pride and Prejudice together. I like them both and hope Knightley does well in this.

I adore Viggo and Cronenberg so I can't wait to see this.

So? Keira's only four or five years younger than Pike, right? And imo, Keira's always looked a littler older than her actual age. I think it's the bone structure. I think Pike can play younger than her age. Unless the character being 18 is some hugely important plot point I don't see the big deal.

Lord, KK fans seem touchy. Not everyone likes Keira Knightley very much and there *are* other English actresses out there. Pike is one of them, she is very good, and I would've liked this better for her. It's as simple as that.
