A Moviegoing Truth

Popcorn is delicious.

Hey Nathaniel, random question...have you seen the documentary "Stagedoor" about Stagedoor Manor in the Catskills? I feel like it'd be up your alley...it came out a year ago but I stumbled across it recently.

Every single form of popcorn is delicious. Except, like, caramel popcorn. What the hell is that all about?

Ah, popcorn... It makes a true hypocrite of me. I can chomp my way through a vat of it quite happily at the cinema, but likewise reserve a quiet air of resentment for those who sit next to me with it when I don't have any. [The sheer disrespect for the cinematic art form! The inconsiderate presumption to bring its smell and its noise into my personal space! And... damn it... I want some now!]

kamikaze doesn't like caramel corn? My world is falling to pieces. I love caramel corn. Such a bizarre creation with so beautiful results.

The bigger question is: sweet or salty?

Your procrastinating on part 3 of the Moulin Rouge tribute again, aren't you?

And I'm still surprised you haven't mentioned the trailer for "The Invasion" - especially as it has a female protagonist fighting to save her child as well as the rest of the world and this is Action Heroine week, so it actually sort of seems appropriate.

But, whatever -

Count me in amoung the caramel-corn lovers. Whatever happened to the microwave caramel corn they used to sell? It with a big sheet or block of caramel that you stuck into the microwave bag - hot, sweet, sticky fun. I miss that stuff.

And while we're on randomness, I watched the Science of Sleep last night. Cute, but it's no Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, although written and directed by Michael Gondry.

And I've finally seen Volver - ok, Carmen Maura is a Goddess and Almodovar is a God but that pretty much goes without saying, right? The real revelation was Ms Cruz who, for the sake of her career and posterity, should stick to films in your own language - in fact, stick to Almodovar and great directors of his ilk, and stop with the crappy films - English language or otherwise. I know, the paychecks have been tempting but why make crap when you could make ART?

Seriously, she is warm, fluid, full of life and vitality in Volver - total news to me. Although in fact my favorite performance was actually Blanca Portillo as Agustina.

We now return you to your regularly-scheduled randomness.

I worked one summer at a movie theater. They stored cooked pop corn in a bin to be sold the following day. One time I saw a mouse jump from that collection of pop corn, so I haven't eaten the stuff since that time.
