Say It Aint So, Bub

Damn. Hugh Jackman has turned down a second gig as Oscar host. At least for now.

I really wanted him to come back... had such a good time last year, I did. Especially when he & Hathaway forced fantasies of a co-starring gig in a future movie musical upon me.

But then I'm easier to please than your average viewer when it comes to awards shows. For example I've read a ton of bizarro world articles in the wake of the Ricky Gervais hosting the Globes news which seem to go along the lines of 'maybe it'll finally be a fun show'. Ummm... since when AREN'T the Globes fun? The celebrities are plentiful, drunk, squeezed next to each other in sometimes revealing or incongruous table assignments. I l-o-v-e it. The Globes have always been fun. Except for that incredibly lame strike-sponsored year but let's go back to pretending that didn't happen.

If they're bringing someone back for the Oscars, my vote is for Steve Martin or Ellen DeGeneres. My dream would be somebody movie-connected who is also hilarious and can sing. If the Oscar's dont mind sharing the EMMY Host, Neil Patrick Harris would work, too. I'm sure there are less obvious names that would be great choices too... Kristin Chenoweth? Tina Fey. Hmmm. Now, it's not exactly an enviable gig, this Oscar host thing, since no matter how well you do you'll get at least a few (okay several) savage reviews. But even if the media doesn't pat the hosts on the back for their efforts, I'm sure their bank accounts are ready with a bear hug. Who would you like to see hosting the Oscars?

Kristin Chenoweth and Neil Patrick Harris double-team!

And now that I've gotten that in my head, I will now be disappointed if they don't host no matter who they pick. Darn.

I vote for Tina Fey!

Katie Featherston, assuming that her "friend" follows her. If that Paranormal whatzit can get provoked into doing all that freaky shit by just one camera and two average people, imagine what it might feel compelled to wreak upon the Oscar audience! If all it does is grab Jack Nicholson by the ankle and yank him down the aisle and out the door, screaming, I will be unbeatably entertained.

I don't understand why everyone hates the Oscar host. Jon Stewart was terrible (no he wasn't). Steve Martin wasn't funny (yes he was). The reviews are always bizarre.

I am crushed about Jackman.

kathy griffin. That would be a show to remember! lo!

I'd always welcome a return by Ellen, wonderful host.

Tina Fey would also certainly be nice.

One of these days Meryl should really think about it.

I'm so sick of the sight of Ricky Gervais's face so the Globes better be the furthest he gets to an awards ceremony!

I'd like to see Neil Patrick Harris for the Oscars, as well.

Jon Stewart, the best host I've ever seen. But he's too great for Oscars.

Stephen Colbert. Though I really like Cocoa Dior's suggestion of Kathy Griffen too!

I would LOVE it it Emma Thompson hosted. She's so great every time she's on any sort of talk show or awards ceremony (her helping Sally Hawkins through her Globes speech comes to mind). Plus: she's an actress. I liked the push in the direction of actual actors as opposed to comedians.

Amy Adams! She can sing, Oscar loves her, she is easy on the eye and would have no problem making the audience fall in love with her (right?).

Meryl Streep. She's VERY movie-connected, can sing, and is hilarious. Maybe not THIS year, since she'll be nominated yet again, but eventually she really has to do it. The trick is just finding a year where she's not gonna be nominated and hence face a bit of a conflict of interest. Those years are rare.

I second the Amy Adams choice, though. She'd be good. I also loved Ellen and Jon Stewart.

Tina Fey is my ideal choice, but now that I see Kristin Chenoweth's name pop up, that sounds fun.

Neil Patrick Harris would also be a good choice

I really hope its not someone who can sing. I don't want to see a bunch of musical numbers. I never enjoy them, they're always conventional and stupid. It doesn't excite me at all, I've seen it all before. I LOVE the suggestion of KATHY GRIFFIN! That would be the best oscars EVAH! Actors hosting the oscars would be good also.

I thought Ellen was fine as host and I wouldn't be at all opposed to her coming back. But I really like that Emma Thompson suggestion.

Emma and Meryl! Probably the two most naturally funny serious actresses ever, right?

but Oscar never goes with actors actors... they go with comedians who occassionally act. or some such

Werner Herzog.

mikadzuki -- LMFAO

lets have a totally nihilistic oscar night with all sorts of rude/hilarious people as co-hosts:

SANDRA, WERNER, KATHY GRIFFIN, CHRIS ROCK, MARGARET CHO, GORE VIDAL

I could see Adam Shenkman giving it to one of his cronies/favs -- Steve Martin, Adam Sandler, or Queen Latifah.

I don't blame Hugh for not doing it again. It's a pretty thankless job, and you don't want to only be known for that. I heard that hosts don't make that much either. Like $15,000 or so.

tina fey and steve martin FTW! they were pretty funny together at the last show

Not Neil Patrick Harris. I have nothing against him, but he's hosted the Tonys and Emmys this year alone, so I'm not sure if he'd bring much that's fresh to the table. I like the Oscars to lead, not follow.

Tina Fey and Steve Martin would be my first choice.

I don't care who hosts, I just wish they would put better people on the red carpet to interview people. Either get interviewers who know about movies or get interviewers who are funny. I just can't take Ryan Seacrest one more year.

Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one who is fascinated by the Golden Globe seating arrangements. It's always so odd. I swear that if they sold seating charts for different years, I'd by them. My first purchase would be 1988 which was particularly crazy seating-wise.

Christine said...

Ugh, sorry: "buy" not "by." I'm like the nihilistic Oscar night idea if only to see Herzog and Cho present an award together. Perhaps Bjork and David Lynch could co-present an award as well.

Paul Outlaw said...

Definitely not Neil Patrick Harris. He is a great host, no question, but the perfect level of self-deprecation that he brought to the Tonys and Emmys (his peers) would be cringe-worthy at the Oscars. He belongs to the Jon Stewart/Letterman/Ellen non-movie-star type of host. I want a big, funny, entertaining icon--like Steve Martin, Whoopi, Robin Williams, Billy Crystal...or Bette Midler.

Amy Poehler!

Well I loved Hugh, very disappointed but he didn't say he'd never do it again.

My other choices would be NPH, Jon Stewart, Whoopi, or Ellen.

Please no tag-team hosting. One master of ceremonies is enough.

Please no Kristin Chenoweth. I get she's talented but I don't want to listen to someone talk like they're on helium all night.

And please no Meryl Streep. No one would be able to tell if she's telling a joke or if she's serious.

I love the Werner Herzog suggestion. Maybe a team of Werner, Quentin Tarantino, and Katherine Bigelow could do a director's hosting.

On the actor side, I like the suggestions of Emma Thompson, Amy Adams and Queen Latifah. I'd like to see the team of Emma Thompson and Hugh Laurie - they're both so clever at awards nights.

adri said...

Sorry, addition - I'd love to see Emma Thompson and Hugh Laurie continue the Billy Crystal tradition of inserting themselves into each Best Picture nominee.

I would die from happiness if Werner Herzog hosted the Oscars. He could introduce the musical numbers with "I believe the common character of the universe is not harmony, but chaos, hostility, and murder."

Seriously, though, I would love some combination of Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert/Steve Carrell and other Daily Show related people.

I could see Shankman going with Ben Stiller or Steve Martin.....OR just going back to basics and asking Whoopi....

joy said...

I want the producers to set a huge mirror on stage like the one in ”The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus“, and use that to introduce a number of host thorough out the entire ceremony. That way even if the jokes aren't terribly funny, the audience will always be interested to know who's gonna be "transformed" to who.

Bring back Steve Martin! For the love of all that is right in the world, bring back Steve Martin! And, sure, get Tina Fey in for a couple of comedy sketches too.

I don't want Ricky Gervais to do it either since, let's face it, not many people even know who he is.

Kristin Chenoweth!

I want Billy back-I have to admit it. I love his showmanship, I love the medley, I love the inserting himself, and I love the inside Hollywood humor. America, apparently, did too, since Billy's shows always got the top ratings.

NATHANIEL R said...

PAUL OUTLAW for the win.

BETTE MIDLER would be awesome! Hopefully since Adam Shankman's a big queen he'll think of it ;)

Sarah Silverman, Jane Lynch, Kristen Wiig?

Anyone but Neil Patrick Harris, I'm so sick of him hosting every award show
