Pfeiffer Hits Berlin

Director Stephen Frears attends to his star La Pfeiffer.
"It's gonna be a hot time in the cold town tonight"

Abundant photos are starting to show up online now that the Chéri team have arrived in Berlin, held their press conference and early buzz is spreading. Here's The Hollywood Reporter's Kirk Honeycutt with what sounds like pre-review thoughts beginning to tumble out. A bit on Michelle Pfeiffer being "radiant" and a lot of "wonderfuls" about her performance and the picture itself. There's even a little aside for Julie Delpy's vampiric period piece The Countess, too. The most intriguing barely expressed note is that Chéri wasn't as much like Dangerous Liaisons (the other Frears/Pfeiffer collaboration) as one might expect.

Recommendation: Pfeiffer the Face is doing a great job keeping up with new promotional photos of TFE's #1 girl so check that site out.

Update: There's a mixed SPOILER-HEAVY review at Screen Daily but I wouldn't suggest reading it unless you've already read the book. Why do so many reviewers feel the need to describe everything? And uh-oh a negative review at Variety which is not pleased with Pfeiffer's performance but suggests that Kathy Bates will win fans as Madame Peloux.

She won't win the Silver Bear, because Swinton will prefer to give it to an unknown actress and also because won in '92 for Love Field,

but she's definitely nominated next year (see : Being Julia)

You should post a pic of Tilda too; she's wearing some weird hat!

I've mentioned this before: most of the photo calls, press conferences, etc. are streamed live on the Berlinale website. They also put the videos in the archive section later, so I expect the videos from the "Chéri" photo call, press conference and the red carpet to be up sometime tomorrow. You can find the live streams and the archived videos here:

I watched the "Milk" press conference earlier today and that was pretty interesting.

It's not fair, nobody should be that gorgeous at 50. My jaw hit the floor when I saw pics of Michelle in Berlin.

forget it Nat. She wont be nominated for this.

gorgeous at 50 but see sharon stone at the baftas she looked 30.

I hope Kathy Bates receives an Oscar nod in 2010. So does La Pfeiffer.

Can't wait for this. I still need to read the book.

Stone at the BAFTAs looked good for the first in about... 10 years. Pfeiffer has always looked fabulous. No comparison.

carlita, I think the winner will be Brenda Blethyn, but yes, both are the top conteders of next year's award season right now...

If I'm not wrong and if La Pfeiffer will win the award she became the FIRST actress who win two awards at Berlinale...

Shirley McLaine won twice

59 and 71

so it's still possible but I think it will be an unknown, which is good

when it comes to the men, I think Bruno Ganz has a good shot

Screendaily
Times Online

Variey

Remember, Not everyone liked Blanchett in The Golden Age, and if Dench can get nommed for Mrs Henderson presents...

Pfeiffer's in, no doubt, I'm starting her campaign NOW,

Pfeiffer 2010

I really do believe that Pfeiffer will be nominated. These early mixed reviews will seem like distant memories when it premieres in the states.

ooh Variety I forgot that someone died and made them the last word on great performances...

If it's any consolation, it seems that all the reviews out of Berlin from Variety are negative.

are they the same overworked journalis ;) ?

Doesn't this sound like The Duchess? A moderately pleasing and pleasant-but-uninspiring costume drama featuring a note-worthy supporting performance and a beautiful lead actress that will probably miss out because the role seems so well suited to them.

Except that the Academy obviously likes Pfeiffer a lot, judging by her 3 noms, and unlike Knightley she's not in the news/magazines very often.

Prestige pic + Frears + come-back + class + we miss ya = OSCAR NOM

Not only that, remember Variety and IFFY reviews of Streep's performance in Doubt this year and still she was the only actress of this season nominated in almost everything with Hathaway

I think Pfeiffer is fine

ooh Glenn I hope you're wrong, no offense. Would love to see Pfeiffer's name on the ballot a year from now. Her stunning omission from the '02 supporting race still freaks me out, She is "White Oleander"! Hopefully that snub will help this year.
