Angelina Sees You

Well... someone to the right of you at least. Hi, Ang'.

Did I ever tell you about the time Angelina Jolie did see me. Oh, of course I did. Best celebrity sighting ever. We were close enough to touch. Not that we did!

I'm so ready for Angelina Jolie to have another Girl, Interrupted or A Mighty Heart level performance again, aren't you? Here's hoping that The Tourist (the film she's in costume for above) co-starring Johnny Depp is a winner. The behind the scenes crew indicates it might be: Oscar winning screenwriter (Julian Fellowes), Oscar winning cinematographer (John Seales), Oscar winning costume designer (Colleen Atwood) and the Oscar winning director of The Lives of Others (Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck... well sort of an Oscar winning director ... it's never listed as an Oscar win on their IMDb pages but the directors of Best Foreign Film winners always claim the prize. It's not like a country can put an Oscar on its mantlepiece. Countries have borders, not mantles. We hope Florian got to keep the statue.

I was always certain that the country is the one who gets to keep the Oscar and not the director...

i don't believe on "the tourist" as contender for Oscar because the original french movie "anthony zimmer" was nice with a nice story and a nice twist but nothing was great or amazing !

Weirdly enough, after posting a comment on Sigourney Weaver below, I was wondering why nobody makes a list of Best Actress winners that later on have actually topped their previous works, those that led them to the Oscar and compare it to one of Best Supporting Actress doing the same. I'm rambling, my point is why on earth BA Oscars are often career deccelaretors (?) while BSA Oscars are more career boosters, specially since they're awarded to actress with similar ages (as opposed to Best Actor which are given later in a career).

And how that relates to Sigourney Weaver? You might wonder. Because I thought maybe she's lucky she doesn't have one, she has never stopped working and giving at least good performances.

I do remember your run in with Angie fondly - even if it didn't happen to me. Glad to see you mention A Mighty Heart, which is one of my favourite performances of the last decade. Angie's best (cinematic) performance...I'm a bit partial to Gia.

I just pictured you saying that while being in the bathroom, stoned, and Meryl and Julianne (in "A Single Man" character) are with you, laughing like crazy.

Aaaand... Cut!

Iggy -- good point. and the reason i think it's so often a decelerator is that they usually have already given a better performance BEFORE they win. so people are like "it's about time"

and then if awards are a narrative, that's such a climax. not an opening paragraph.

James T -- please art direct all my fantasy sequences for me!

LOVE her!

Jolie truly floored me with "A Mighty Heart"... and proved once and for all "Gia"/ "Girl, Interrupted" was no fluke.

Consider that scene where she's giving a televised interview... those spikes of devastated rage threating her tranquil demeanor ("How dare you ask me that...") upon being asked a tactless question about her murdered husband...

*sigh*

Damn you, Queen Blanchett!

For about a tenth of a second, I thought that was a photo of...Sandra Bullock. (Squint for a moment and try it - see?) I'm not sure that's a good thing.

I really don't know that Angie has it in her anymore. I remember waaaaay back when she was a live wire in "Dancing About Architecture" (the title of which was changed to something boring and utterly forgettable for home release).

I think she needs to follow Nicole and Penelope and work with directors who are willing to push her a bit, but it feels like she's gotten too comfortable. I mean, Angelina Jolie should NOT be the one doing Eastwood Oscar-bait roles; she should be the one doing mad, freaky on-the-edges stuff and surprising us every year. I think it's the wealth and the uber-fame; it's like she's become a parody of herself.

Let me tell you when her name wasn't read on Oscar nomination morning for A Mighty Heart I almost shat myself. For me Angelina's Marianne Pearl was one of the most underrated performances of that year. Still pisses me off to this day.

If Nine taught us anything, it's that too many Oscar winners can cancel each other out and produce a negative.

I thought Angelina burned out after Girl, Interrupted. Her best work was in her early 20's with Girl, Gia and George Wallace. It's a bit strange someone could be so young and so good.

I haven't seen A Mighty Heart (I know! I'm on it!) but something tells me the girl's still got it. I mean, she was the best thing about that poor-excuse-of-a-movie Wanted.

And Janice speaks the gospel, y'all. Shouldn't every actress be following Cruz's/Kidman's career trajectory? Minus the whole Bewitched thing, of course. ;-D

Hayden said...

She bothers me. I don't think she's done enough atonement for one of the worst careers of the decade. I hate that this celebrity status she's achieved has made her into some consummate capital-a Actress of our time when truly, her career is embarrassing.

She's not talented, but people would really like her to be, therefore, she is.

I agree with Hayden. It seems that when Angelina and Brad got together, people and Holly are so quick to forgive Alexander, Lara Croft, Beyond Borders, Life or Something Like It, Gone In Sixty Seconds, etc. as well as Brad's duds.

It's funny that we're not far from 2012 and your half-joking (semi-serious?) prediction that Aniston would *still* be milking her spurned wife routing looks entirely plausible. I like her less and less every year as a result.

Angelina is an underrated actress....

The Good Shepherd
Changeling
A Mighty Heart
Pushing Tin
Gia
George Wallace
Playing By Heart
Girl, Interrupted
Foxfire

Cluster-I had the exact same thing to say here. Jen (whom I adore, and always will as she was Rachel Green), continues to milk the Pitt dump, and we're getting awfully close to 2012.

Jolie is a one-note actress. She’s best when she’s playing characters closer to her own persona of an outcast. Now that she’s the world’s favorite spokeswoman for the poor, giving birth to Brad Pitt’s children–an Oscar winner on her first nomination, what else is there for her to do? She’s a box office draw, she has fun making Hollywood garbage while maintaining a lifestyle that enables her to do what she does personally –taking care of such a big family while giving them the best at the same time.

Btw – A Mighty Heart was a summer release – not that should matter but I think it had an affect of people having a out of sight out of mind kind of reaction towards it.

Nathaniel how come you’re not more in love with character actresses? CA(s) usually has the most range and chops of anyone and yet I feel like you’re drawn to a pretty face – instead of someone who blows you away with their talent. As a kid I’ve always loved older actresses and never these little girls – they so bore me.

NATHANIEL R said...

/3rtfull -- I'm usually criticized for concentrating so much on older actresses! not the other way around.

i've always loved movie stars. and i do occassionally geek out over the character actresses.

Iggy said...

* decelerators, that's right, sorry. Sometimes I make up words, ha.

Nathaniel - You're right. Winning an Oscar is the climax and a career's highest peak, but I guess I think it shouldn't be the only one. For me following the narrative comparison, what follows the Oscar should be at least, if we draw a line of the entire narrative, a line with its own small peaks a bit below the highest peak (the Oscar) not a down flat line that indicates almost no life. And in some cases, it seems as if after the climax some actresses would go to sleep (ok, here I'm thinking about other kind of climax :)). But it's not that second climaxes (?) can't happen. Look at Meryl Streep. Ok, she's an exceptional case in many ways. So look at the actors, actors like Sean Penn or Daniel Day-Lewis constantly surprise us with still better performances. And it should be the women those having multiple climaxes, not men (here again, sorry).

I guess it's just disappointing/disheartening that someone can consider herself she has done everything when she's still in her thirties or early forties. I prefer to think there's a group of actresses that share the same kind of manager who advices them to try the blockbuster/franchise thing after having gained the prestige with the Oscar, so that they can be bankable. And sadly, I include Cruz in the group (even if she's a supporting winner) for going Pirates instead of Von Trier. But it's true that in her case she's still got Almodóvar to go back and forth to challenging parts.

I hate the media sometimes.

About Angelina Jolie... I don't know what to do of her. She is obviously talented and while I praise her for still doing at least a movie per year, she does so much crappy work these days one has to wonder if being an actress is something she's passionate about or if it is just a means of paying the bills...

Even Brad Pitt seems to think like that a bit. I want batshit crazy Brad Pitt back (Se7en, Twelve Monkeys, Fight Club), not boring Pitt (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Benjamin Button, Assassination of Jesse James, Ocean's 11, 12 and 13)... That guy from the 90s was a genius.

And I feel bad for them both because they're two actors I like a lot. And I'd love for them to do more Oscar-worthy work, hell, work that is worthy of their fame and reputation.

Jorge Rodrigues said...

Well, at least Brad Pitt still does quality work sometimes (Babel, Inglorious Basterds, Burn After Reading)...

There's my gurl Angie looking fabulous! Yay!!!

I hope for another great performance out of her too. When is she doing "Atlas, Shrugged"? That could be a winning role. This action stuff that she's doing now won't be ("Salt," "The Tourist"). They'll be like her "The Interpreter." But I enjoyed both "A Mighty Heart" and "Changeling" (as much as you can enjoy something that overblown, but at least she was moving in it), so I'm hoping for a return-to-form soon.

And for what the film was, she rocked it in "Wanted" too.

She is no longer doing Atlas Shrugged. It is now Charlize Theron.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, she is in talks with Darren Aronofsky to do the film Serena. Here's hoping she does that. I would love for them to work together.

Katie said...

UGH. She's so unbelievable overrated, I don't even know what to say. She's made such crappy films, which such shoddy work, why is she even mentioned on this site, I don't know.

...oh wait, HER FACE!

Could it be her ridiculous beauty and fame that makes people like her more than her work deserves??

I remember her accent in "Alexander". *crying inside*

When Laura Linney was announced as a BA nominee for "The Savages", leaving Jolie out, I REJOICED.

There is sanity in the world. Oh happy day.

Did you rejoice when Cate Blanchett was announced as a nominee for Elizabeth: The Golden Age, leaving Jolie out (love her or hate her, she was amazing in A Mighty Heart)? She most likely got in the next year for her hammy work in Changeling as an apology for that, you know.

Besides, she already has an Academy Award. It's not like snubbing her will retroactively take it away.
