Who Are They Really?

Posted by Thombeau of Fabulon...

Kevin Aucoin, the late, great makeup-artist to the stars, had a gift for changing faces. Featured here are a few prime examples; well-known actresses portraying legends of another era. Can you tell who they are and who they're paying tribute to? (If you're already familiar with Aucoin's books, please keep their identities to yourself and let others have a guess. It'll be fun!) The answers will be given in a later post. No prizes, but if you name them all correctly you can feel pretty damn good about yourself because you are fabulous, darling!

Oohh these are fantastic! I think I can recognise a few faces. My guesses:

1) Penelope Cruz as Audrey Hepburn
2) Gina Gershon as Raquel Welch
3) Christina Ricci (maybe? It's the eyes) as Edith Piaf
4) Susan Sarandon as Greta Garbo
5) Winona Ryder (not too sure)as Elizabeth Taylor
6) ?
7) ?
8) ?

I absolutely love number 6, even though I can't figure it out! I am incredibly impressed with Aucoin's work, particularly if that actually is Christina Ricci.

I believe the first one is Maria Menounos. 6 might be Robin Tunney as i don't know who. And the last one looks like Isabella Rossellini.

I might be really off the mark, but I think the first one actually might be Calista Flockhart!

7 is Courtney Love i think!
I thought the first one was Jennifer Lopez, but yeah it definitely looks like Penelope Cruz.

I think 1 is definitely Calista Flockhart plus two hairy eyebrows. Funnily, I find number 4 (Susan Sarandon) looks like an older version of number 3, Cristina Ricci but maybe it's just because they are pictured together. As for the rest, I agree with kat, including that I have no idea about the last 3.

Raquel Welch? For some reason I thought Gina Gershon was doing Sophia Loren.

The last one must be Isabella Rossellini, doing...Natacha Rambova or Pola Negri?

Aaron C. Thomas said...

4 is Samantha Morton, right?

Erich Kuersten said...

I can get Gina Gershon as Sophia Loren in the first set, and in the last four:

5. Cher as Liz Taylor
6. Winona Ryder as Clara Bow
7. Tom Waits as Jean Harlow
8. Isabella Rossellini as Jackie Curtis

All I could come with:

3. ? as Edith Piaf
4. Susan Sarandon as Bette Davis
5. Winona Ryder as Liz Taylor
6. ?
7. ?
8. Isabella Rossellini as ?

Number 3 is killing me!

isn't #8 trying to be Clara Bow?

Chris Na Taraja said...

#1 Calista Flockhart as Audrey Hepburn

#2 ? as sophia Loren

#3 Chirstina Ricci as Edith Piaf

I can't tell if #4 is supposed to be Garbo or Davis, but it looks like it's Sarandon under there. I'm going to say susan being Bette.

#5 Jennifer Connley? as Liz Taylor

#6 Nat, this one would be Clara bow, who could it be though, Reese Witherspoon?

#7 is unrecognizable, becuase I think it's Renee Zelweiger with her eyes wide open! She's doing Marilyn Monroe, A rare sight indeed!

#8 looks like Cher trying to be Mary Pickford, or at least the love child of the two.

You'll get no guesses from me, but I'm dying to find out.

Good to see Gina Gershon. Always liked her.

for some reason #6 is saying "robin tunney" to me but as she's not anywhere close to as famous as the other ladies impersonating other famous ladies, i'm guessing my gut visual reaction is wrong

Robin Tunney for #6 is the closest possibility. Some of these other guesses (for 6 and 7) are outrageous: Christina Applegate!? Courtney Love?!? Demi Moore?!?! Cher?!?!?!? Come on, people.

Thombeau said...

This has all been most amusing! For me, anyway...

Anonymous said...

Funny. Does anyones else see the last one the other way around? That is, ? as Isabella Rosellini in Blue Velvet.

Anonymous said...

Oops, I meant "is there anyone else who sees the last one.... as Isabella Rosellini in BV?

Is it just me or does #8 remind anyone else of helena bonham carter, just a teensy bit?... maybe I'm on wacky-pills, I dunno... love the gina gershon one, btw.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous @ 2:02 am, that was my first thought!

.... we may both be on crazy pills...

Thombeau said...

Crazy pills for everyone!!!

Anonymous said...

I'll take some of those.

Now that you've pointed her out, I can definitely see Calista Flockhart in 1. No. 6 & 7 are still driving me to distraction. I think I'll fall back on ryan's guess for those!

Anonymous said...

I don't think it's been said, but I think #7 looks like Mira Sorvino.

Janice said...

The pathetic thing is that I looked at the book (ok, it was a few years ago) and still can't remember on my own who is "playing" Clara Bow and Edith Piaf.

I think it's kind of cool that Gershon is so...gershonness that she resists being hidden under makeup. She (and Rossellini) are someone still "themselves".

Chris Na Taraja said...

ok, i just looked up someof these, so.....

it's really pretty incredible, but #6 is Demi Moore as Clara Bow. How he got her very square face to look like a tiny little pouting triangle is amazing.

I wasn't able to find out who #5 or #7 was, but I will say no more.

Anonymous said...

I had to look it up! Alla Nazinova is #8. Whether that's Isabella Rossellini or not I dunno!

Anonymous said...

I think Bailey's got them right - oooh, congrats on Alla Nazimova. I'd completely forgotten her. Jean Harlow, though, I'm still not sure who's playing her.

I saw a photoshoot with Rosselini made up as 4 or 5 different actresses from the past. She makes a great Audrey Hepburn as well. She's really amazingly versatile in how she can look.

the answers --this was fun thombeau. i had totally forgotten these photos
