Hate Her

I don't try to keep hating on the Skank. But she makes it so unavoidable for me. Now she's telling personal crap about her ex-husband's failings as if he doesn't have enough problems, being dumped by his more successful wife... now he's got everyone knowing his personal troubles. What a thoughtful gal.

If this "girl from a trailer park" manages to parlay this latest self-serving pity-party into even more accolades and fame I swear to God I will end up in an institution.

You won't be alone.

Well I mean, if he had a substance abuse problem, that can'tve been good for the marriage... but yeah, seriously, keep it to yourself, Hilary. if you want to make headlines, go make a good movie.

And hey, you never know, she could win another oscar for The Black Dahlia, beating Streep, Winslet, Kidman, Blanchett, and Bening YET AGAIN. That would suck.

You guys probably already know this, not that it means anything. But Swank won both her Oscars twenty years after Sally Fields won both of hers. (for release years 1979/1999; 1984/2004) Fields also made an embarressing comment in her second speech that haunted her for years afterwards. Then, Swank switched out "You really like me" for "trailer park." Fields never got another nomination after her two wins (or before). Hopefully, Swank will follow in her footsteps.

I realized there was a correlation, but I didn't realize it was THAT exact. Weird.

Yeah, I hope Swank does indeed become Sally Field, part II. It seems likely.

adam k. said...

Another correlation: Field deserved her first oscar MUCH more than she did her second (so said the critics anyway). So did Swank.

Good point. I'm pretty certain Norma Rae was well more deserved than Places (I've never watched Places all the way through ... but I love Norma Rae). Yeah, same with Swank ... who will be back on the TV in T-minus how many years?

My money's on like 5 (the same amount of time it took after that first oscar for her career to get sufficiently in the gutter for her to need that second oscar to revive it... she'll get back down there again in equal time).

lol ... good answer.

Pfeiffer adoration, Skank hatin'. All in one day. I heart "The Film Experience".

FYI Adam K. Hilary (Thank God) is supporting in The Black Dahlia

That actually makes me a little worried that she might get nominated.

But not really.

Anonymous said...

Well, if it's any consolation, Brian DePalma hasn't gotten anyone nominated for almost twenty years.

Loving the mock Vanity Fair headline!

And hey guys - don't wish Hilary on our small screens! That would put her (gulp) in contention for Emmy nominations, and we'd probably STILL have to suffer her at the Globes, SAGs, etc.

The pain would be unbearable!

the only chance she will get nominated again is when she drag again... she will never get nominated when she plays real woman.

I love Sally Field in Norma Rae and the film itself. I've never seen the other film she won for.

I totally agree with everything about Swank, except unlike Field she did the trailer park thing in both of her speeches (before thanking her now ex-husband I believe) and it was sort've silly the first time and it was downright insulting the second time.

I find it ironic that a girl from a trailer park wasn't willing to help her alcoholic husband out.

I know it may be a little blasphemous to say on this here board, but I actually like Hilary Swank and think she's a pretty good (and attractive) actress, although I certainly do understand why she grates some folks. I seriously doubt she'll be nominated for 'The Black Dahlia' because (as Vincent noted) dubious Brian De Palma's at the helm and hey, if he can't lead Pacino and Pfeiffer (a superior actress whom I absolutely love) to nominations, I doubt he can direct Swank to one. Just a hunch...

I think she's a fine actor, too, although I admit she's quite the Hollywood anomaly. The people she played in Boys Don't Cry and M$B might've been trailer-parky characters, but they were still complete performance that worked perfectly in their respective movies.

It's not her work, per se, it's HER! I'd still hand her the statue for 1999 (over Kate Winslet in Holy Smoke, no less, and I consider it to be Winslet's finest work) (which freaks me out no end because I'm saying Swank was once better than Winslet's ever been, and OH MY GOD I hate living in a world with that logic)...

[Breathe]

Yeah, she's a good actress. But she's so freaking smug.

True, she is kind of smug -- I hear you there, Rob. I bet the way you feel about Hilary is like the way I feel about George Clooney -- beautiful and talented but comes off as such an arrogant prick sometimes. (Don't even get me started on my viseral reaction to Sean Penn.)

Okay ...

good point Rob. If we're going to wish her away, it might as well be from everything ... and, that's mighty big of you to still give Hilarious Wanker the gold in '99 over unnominated Kate Winslet.

Glenn ...

... yeah, it's very ironic. I think it would have been in her best interest to just keep mum about the whole thing. Geez, kick a dog when he's down! This will surely send him into relapse!

I think she's a good actress, too, it's just the smugness AND the overrated factor that makes me hate her. I did love her in Boys Don't Cry, but I'm not sure if I'd give her the gold over Winslet cause I've never really seen Holy Smoke (I rented it once, but I didn't get all the way through and had to give it back! argh). She was definitely better than Bening in 1999... but not in 2004.

adam k. said...

And I kind of agree about George Clooney... he often irks me as well.

She is a great actress and a great person. Catwoman wishes she could be half the actress that Swank is!!

Am I the only one who recoils at the sight of Hilary Swank with her legs apart in a bikini? Every time she tries to be fem and sexy she falls flat. I know what I'm talking about - I actually saw The Affair of the Necklace.

She needs to embrace her manish quality and quit trying to be the next Kim Basinger or America's Next Top Model, or whatever it is she's trying to do.

NATHANIEL R said...

great actress ? I'd argue that she's given one great performance. one good one. and a whole bunch of performances that aren't any better than anyone elses...

don't see how that makes one "great"

great person? hmmm. there's a reason they refer to sobriety programs with the phrase "anonymous" so it's really in poor judgment for her to talk about it to a national magazine. really bad taste.

Don't celebrities hire publicists to not make asses out of themselves? What am I missing?

My big problem with the Sally Field comparison is that the "trailer park" speech is so much more insulting than the "you really like me speech". Field's speech was sort of embarrassing but in a more "I'm so excited and I got carried away!" kind of way.

Anonymous said...

Don't get me wrong ... I'll take Sally Field over the other one any day. Yeah, Fields embarressed herself in the heat of excitement(wasn't she a surprise win or no?). Swank was being obnoxious and overly earnest.

adam k. said...

Oh totally. Swank's speech was way worse. Plus she'd already given it a million times before, making her seem robotic. Plus, remember how she kept going over the music, in a really obnoxious way? She is no Adrien Brody.

I like Field much more, too... it's just that the correlation is a good reason to believe Swank will never be nominated again.

Sally Field's speech was kind of endearing, actually. I think people refer to it in terms of "aw cute, I can't believe she said that." Cause come on, it was only the truth. They did obviously like her A LOT and she seemed a little surprised by that. Whereas Swank just kept going and going with shit no one wanted to hear.

You know, I think I am actually more annoyed by the Skank than by the Berry. Whoa.

I cannot believe this thing has 2 Best Actress oscars.

She's vile, and I hate her.

:)

Glenn Dunks said...

"It's not her work, per se, it's HER!"

So true. As Nat said too, she's given one great perf, one good one and a bunch of perfs that are neither here nor there in mostly bad movies (The Core was one of the worst disaster movies I've ever seen). Until she plays against type successfully she won't be seen as much more.

But, i agree that she's not actually ugly. She can be quite pretty in an unconventional way (which is almost better). But when she tries to be all girly girl (like the photo spread) it looks odd and offputting.
