I Did Not Live Blog The FrankenGlobes Awards Show...

... or whatever it is that NBC showed us instead of our beloved Golden Globe party. As a writer I sympathize with the WGA but, geez louise, I don't wanna go without my movie ceremonies. I watched from an empty apartment (Golden Globes night without a bustling party chez moi? Sacrilege!) whilst crying into my pillow. My dear (and hilarious) friend Nick Davis did live-blogging duties.

Update 1: Nick's obsessive posting got gobbled by blogger. But check back tomorrow for a really good laugh. Blogger will work the kinks out. I just hung up with Nick and we're both feeling that maybe it's a Bush dynasty conspiracy since unkind (and funny) things were said. What I want to know is this: We can finally remove the Bush family from the White House in January 2009. But who is going to remove Billy Bush from my television? They all must go! Let's make it a Bush clearance party.

Update 2: If you (wisely) steered clear of that broadcast you can check out the Golden Globe pages for the winners. Too bad there wasn't a ceremony since there were a few interesting surprises. Best Pictures: Atonement (drama) and Sweeney Todd (musical or comedy) You know: the exact movies that everyone has just dumped from their Oscar prediction lists for Best Picture.

I feel you, Cecilia. I feel you

But back to the show. I'll tell you: I can't do this again. If anything else gets cancelled I'm going to f-r-e-a-k. This show was a travesty. So, so, so tacky and inappropriate. Discussing the winners and losers right after they've been announced and who should have won? I never thought I'd say that but this particular development of the mutated version of the Golden Globes was even more embarrassing than the BFCA's "prediction" bragging. I felt like I need a shower after watching it. Bitching about the winners is the game we play at home. That's what parties and editorials and, um, blogging are for. It's not for the telecast you simpletons. That's rude.

Sweeney Todd beat out Juno

WTF Atonement won Best Pic Drama?!?!

adam k. said...

Whadya know, I predicted ALL of those.

You guys, Atonement is not that shocking. It had friggin 7 nominations, and nothing else had more than 4. They loved it. As everyone expected them to, before all the guilds started snubbing it.

Remember when Babel won because it had a ton of nominations? That was just last year.

Schanbel for best director... upset!

NATHANIEL R said...

this was just so embarrassing.

and a real pity not to have a show when the winners (apart from most of the movie acting) were kind of surprising.

Even though I enjoyed Atonement a hell of a lot more than Babel, it seems like a repeat of last year.
Still think No Country or There Will Be Blood will take the only awards that matter.

I predicted Atonement! Yay. And the acting ones, too. I'm really disappointed that it wasn't televised over here, because I'd still watch it and live-blog it. Because I'm insane.

At least we have the SAGs. Right... RIGHT?

I'm not shocked Atonement won, I just need to start preparing now if it's gonna beat out at least three other more worthy (Michael Clayton, NCFOM, and TWBB) pictures, as it did here.

Blogger ate my live-blog even faster than I wrote it; I apologize to those of you who clicked over and found nothing new after 8:12 (I had no idea that the udpates weren't processing, and for some reason still aren't). But come back over to my house soon, and once the whole post is up, we can relive the MAGIC that was this telecrap. telecast.

adam k. said...

Well, I'm glad Atonement won since it's been shafted just about everywhere else.

J.D. said...

Well, I'm glad Atonement won because it's far superior to everything released this year and most films this decade.

There, I said it. Surprised? [/condescending sarcasm]

Atonement and Glenn Close won. I'm happy. :)

That sucked.

That was such an awful awful experience. It all felt so cheap. The commentary was so ill-informed and sophomoric. I had to shower after it.

I'm so mad at myself for watching that NBC coverage "show" instead of CNN or TvGuide Channel. That was some utter shit right there, and Billy Bush has to be one of the biggest tools to grace this Earth.

Anyway, the Globes picked some great winners tonight -- film and especially television. Whew! I know ya'll don't care about TV here, but "Mad Men", Jon Hamm, Glenn Close, Jeremy Piven, Tina Fey, David Duchovny, "Extras", Jim Broadbent, and Samantha Morton? The Emmys wished that they had a winners roster this strong last year.

For the Film side (the reason for our existences), hell yeah for Marion Cotillard, Daniel Day-Lewis, "Atonement", Cate Blanchett, Johnny Depp (finally he wins and can't give his so overdue acceptance speech), JULIAN SCHNABEL!!!!! (best win of the night), Javier Bardem, Dario Marianelli, Eddie Vedder! Good stuff Globes -- you would have had a great show with acceptance speeches from these winners.

NIck, too bad about your blog. I went over there but then saw it stopped.

I would have loved to have heard Samantha Morton say something, though who knows if she would have been there?

I liked some of these winners. At least the HFPA didn't parrot all the US critics' choices down the line.

I'm not crying that Juno didn't win anything.

The awards might have helped Atonement, Sweeney, and Diving Bell had there been a live ceremony. Too bad.

The Globe choice for song rarely wins at the Oscars, so I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for Falling Slowly from Once if it gets nominated.

The Oscars will probably have different results, maybe worse.

As far as the TV awards go, I was kind of happy to see Extras win over the hyped, hyped, hyped 30 Rock.

Does anyone care to tell me what won Best Screenplay. For some reason, the NBC broadcast didn't include that award. Hm..

adam k. said...

No Country won screenplay over Juno.

This does beg the question, when's the last time the golden globe drama winner was NOT nommed for best picture? I think it's been a while. Watch everyone put Atonement back in their predix now. And then watch it still get snubbed.

I KNEW it would win here...

Nick M. said...

Thanks Adam, but I was just taking a stab at NBC's pettiness for refusing to announce Best Screenplay.

Also, the last three films to win Globe's Best Drama and miss out on an Oscar nomination were East of Eden, The Cardinal and Spartacus.

Anonymous said...

Why did you guys watch it on NBC?? It was on CNN as they announced it over in 30 minutes. It was also on E as they announced it.

adam k. said...

And those were all in what, the 50s??

We'll see then if Atonement makes it.

Sid said...

I was so sure they were gonna go for Jolie in Best Actress. Still -- a good number of surprises -- I miss the drama! The speeches!

Also, Best Drama Series and Best Actor for Mad Men! YAY!

I'm glad for Marion Cotillard! She deserves the Oscar. I think NCFOM gonna win but I'm happy for Sweeney Todd double victory. Intersting year and race

BFCA's = 1. Globes = 0

Everyone concerned should be ashamed for that mess that NBC did to the Globes. At least the BFCA's put on a decent show with clips and some winners and acceptance speeches. I'd take that this year over a lame press conference and Billy Bush's "analysis".

Anonymous said...

I watched it on NBC b/c I didn't know of the other outlets that were airing it until it was far too late. And I paid the consequences as well.

Anonymous said...

The only redeeming thing about Billy Bush's ludicrous comments about the winners was his calling out that Marion Cotillard was neither COMEDY OR MUSCIAL! hahahahaha

Anonymous said...

Reading this, I'm so glad we don't have cable or satellite.

Your reactions are so very much more entertaining than watching this apparent numpty-fest would have been.

Where does this leave Atonement? Looking better for BP slot surely, but probably not likely to translate into any acting nods apart from Supporting Actress? Is that the general feeling?

I wish Mary Hart had abit more class, and was less chumy and chatty while delivering the results. It just made her plastic smile look even faker then usual. If she was so angry with the events ,why present the awards? Get someone else.

Glenn Dunks said...

Ugh. Marion freakin' Cotillard. Just... ugh!

Anonymous said...

Well, I find Billy Bush quite entertaining & endearing. The hair / the smile / the vapidity...how could you disagree? La Vie En Rose is now on Comcast "on-demand"....finally saw it - she was way over the top; at times I thought I was watching Lucy with some of the mugging going on. I really hope Julie Christie gets her second, much deserved, Oscar.

Anonymous said...

Marion Cotillard was in a musical film, and the dramatic heft of the performance sealed her win over the more lightweight fare in the category. It was easy to call it just like Jamie Foxx and Reese Witherspoon. Her win was much deserved, and hopefully it'll be the next step in line to winning the SAG and Oscar.

NATHANIEL R said...

sure she's in a musical film but her performance is not comedic (unless you think it's unintentionally so) and it's not musical (unless you consider lipsynching to be a musical expression) which is why people feel that the categorization is bogus.

I know! I'm still pissed that Jim Broadbent and Samantha Morton were unfairly snubbed at the SAG awards, most likely because Longford was a British production. Okay, I'll be generous and think that maybe Morton didn't get in because she's been nominated in supporting categories so far which they don't have at the SAG awards, although Anna Paquin got in, and she's been nominated for the same awards that Morton has been. I can't believe that Broadbent was snubbed though especially when he's been winning all the awards for his performance thus far.

I would have loved to have heard Samantha Morton say something, though who knows if she would have been there?

Yes, I would have liked to seen her get more exposure in the US. She probably wouldn't have been there though because she just had a baby last week. If it were a regular Globe show though and she didn't just have baby, I think she would have shown up.

[Like Jonah from the whale, the rest of my live-blog has just been coughed up from Blogger, after 12 hours of oblivion. Just FYI, since Nathaniel was nice enough to link it.]

Marion Cotillard's placement in Comedy/Musical at the Globes is fine. It's just like Jamie Foxx, Joaquin Phoenix, and Reese Witherspoon being recognized here, and there wasn't any bitching about that. Yes, some lip-synched and some didn't, but they were all musical-based performances in musical-based films (instead of straight-forward musicals). It's the best performance by an actress in a musical or comedy, not best comedic or musical actress, so dramatic performances in musical-based films are as valid for winners as anything.

NATHANIEL R said...

but didn't jamie foxx play his own piano and didn't reese and joaquin both sing: MUSICAL PERFORMANCES ;)

Anonymous said...

Jamie Foxx lip-synched for the majority of his performance in "Ray". He did do all of his own piano-plaing.

A "fun" fact...
Daniel Day Lewis, Johnny Depp, Julie Christie, Marion Cotillard, Javier Bardem, Tina Fey, John Hamm, Julian Schnabel, Joel & Ethan Coen, Samantha Morton, Queen Latifah, Dario Marianelli, Brad Bird, and Jeremy Piven won their first GG last night...

I was kicking myself when I realized that NBC wasn't airing the actual press conference, but the Billy Bush/Nancy O'Dell special instead.
And now I'm kicking myself again since no one seems to have video of the press conference up online. Every site I've checked just has commentary about the winners. Does anyone know where I could watch it?
