Making Friends With Enemies

JA from MNPP here again. When I participated in the "We Can't Wait" countdown with Nat & Co. the other week, we collective countdowners got taken to task for (amongst many many things) leaving off some love for the next effort by the director Michael Mann, Public Enemies.

For my part, Enemies did not make my top 20 list, and looking at the films that did make it I stand by that, but I still kind of wonder why I'm not more excited by this film. I love Bale (yes, even after the bitch-out heard round the world), I love Depp (usually), and I'm one of those crazy people that thought Marion Cotillard deserved that damn Oscar... then there's Billy Crudup, Channing Tatum (mmmm), Lili Taylor, David Wenham (mmmm)... the list goes on and on.

All those actors, plus Michael Mann in the director's chair... well see, Mann always makes movies that sneak up on me. So I think that's what this is. And now, seeing some new pictures from the flick via MSN, well... I am feeling a tingle of anticipation, I am.

There are more at the link so check them out.

Looking at the poster, I do wonder at the decision to have Depp's crotch be the focal point of all the text. Then again... perhaps that is genius. Mad genius!

I think it's because this era is notoriously difficult and a lot of the time when two actors of the size of Depp and Bale get together it's almost... suspicious? I dunno. It's strange, isn't it?

Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, *and* David Wenham? I'm there!

It's fucking distracting.

Re: Marion Cotillard. at least you admit you're a crazy person. KIDDING. don't wanna start all that over again. who knows. Maybe she'll win me over in this or NINE. If Penélope Cruz can turn me around...

the supporting cast is even more exciting to me (Channing -love, David Wenham -yesplease, Crudup -always) because for some reason like some of you I am nervous about DEPP/BALE as a leading pair. I don't know why since i think they're both great individually.

Maybe you're nervous because you think this cast's combined hotness could set the screen on fire and consume you in a burning conflagration in the theater. It's a legitimate concern. ;)

So I've seen the movie. It was okay. Thinking back, the grade is around a C+/B- (But that's because movies tend to worsen in my head, unless I really really like them). Everything was complete (including score, sound effects and editing and visual effects)

Johnny Depp and Marion Cotillard (She especially surprised me since I thought her performance in La Vie En Rose was descent but not winner worthy--Wish Christie would have won)

It was a good movie, but the editing was horrible. In some parts you felt like you were in a video game and others it was just plain sloppy.

Truly the most anticipated of '09 for me.

Okay I know everyone's going to hate me for this...

But I feel like Christian Bale ruins everything he's in. I have never seen a more overrated actor in my life. Agh. He's like a cinematic abortion.

Glenn said...

Yeah... the use of "abortion" is never funny nor warranted in a situation like this. but maybe that's just me!

@ RahulB

So many reasons to hate you for that comment, but I don't. You are strangely misguided, however, about Bale and your choice of words. ;-)

Is it wrong that I already miss Marion Cotillard? Her Oscar appearance this year won me over. You can't not like somebody who praises Kate Winslet. Well played, Cotillard. Well played.

i am deeply confused. i think u r sarcastic, but it is still misleading. clear this up for me: you do NOT like marion and u DIDNT want her to win the oscar, correct?

NATHANIEL R said...

Thach I did not want Cotillard to win the Oscar. I'm a Christie man. But this post was written by JA, who was very much on Team Cotillard last year.

Hope that clears it up.

I should interject that I adore Julie Christie and loved her performance in Away From Her very much too. Just for the record. I'm not that crazy. ;-)

cinematic abortion, overrated actor and Christian Bale are words who don't work together! you can dislike him but say he's an overrated actor,no!he's more an underrated actor! now,he's famous(Batman, not his best work or angry tirade)but this work(American Psycho, the Machinist or Rescue dawn)are unbelievable! He only has a supporting caracter in this movie, the star is Johnny Depp!
whatever,i'm going to see every Johnny Depp films or Mickael Mann films(even if i thinks MM movies are too long)!

NATHANIEL R said...

pomme you mean you're going to see every movie before this comes out... like a project. If so -your ambition is awesome. Or do you just mean you always go to the movies they make?

Problem is the movie doesn't look good at all...

I don't know why we should care about another silly gangster movie, however stylised it is.

Michael Mann hasn't made anything valuable since The Insider, a decade ago.
