Meg Ryan Wins Gold

And she's just as confused as you are as to why. I mean... in the year of The Women?

But hey, it's something for the mantle. Perhaps she'll place this cute little deer on her mantle betwixt those creepy glass entombed masks that are the American Comedy Awards? Horrifying but true: Meg hasn't even won a Golden Globe for Comedy. Yes The Evil One who stole Michelle Pfeiffer's Oscar also gold-blocked Meg in her one real shot at a major statue (for When Harry Met Sally). The Bambi is a German prize for entertainment figures and Meg won for "International Actress" -- We can't read German but we pray that it's a career prize rather than anything connected to her misguided effort to fill Norma Shearer's shoes this past September.

Proof of how nuts the Bambi voters are: the male equivalent of Ryan's prize went to Keanu Reeves this year. For his performance in, er, Street Kings? Go figure!

Oh, Christ. What the hell has become of her? I thought she was on the road to some sort of mini-comeback but she looks as dazed and butchered as she did after In the Cut.

I love her, but I really think it's time to pull the plug.

While the Bambis going to national (german) performers and performances are considered to be somewhat befitting, this definitely isn't the case with international stars. The Bambi isn't Germany's top-notch prize (not to mention that it doesn't have any value abroad) though the organizers would want you to believe otherwise. So the Bambis in the international category go to whoever is just available and willing to come. Seldom has it anything to do with a great performance.

Maybe they're honouring her belatedly for her appearance on Parkinson. Clearly her shining moment as an actress.

I agree with Nathaniel regarding the excess of hate against Ryan. It's true her big time has passed away, but she has been a noteworthy comic actress in several occasions.
For WHEN HARRY MET SALLY she deserved a nomination...or at least to be considered for a shot...
it's true 1989 was a crowded year...
the evil one, the divine Pfeiffer, Adjani, Lange and Pauline Collins (should we really need her?).
IMHO Collins shot could have been taken by Ryan or Turner (The War of Roses)...or by Andie MacDowell (sex, lies and videotape)...of course not a comic performance, but very acclaimed in that year...

Yes 2008 can be defined by only one actress, NOT Streep, Blanchett, Winslet, Jolie, Cruz or Hathaway BUT...Meg Ryan!! I really don't see the logic in her being the international actress of 2008, a decade ago makes much more sense. Like Nathaniel said its more of a career achievement award, which is basically bambi's way of telling Ryan to stop working.
Glen, the Parkinson performance really was remarkable. To this day 3 words are ingrained in my memory, 'Wrap it up!'

Boyd, afaik the Bambi voters are publisher Hubert Burda and the editors in chief of his magazines (mainly gossip mags and women's magazines, I think), so of course they're nuts. ;)
As Lara said, usually they just give the awards to whichever celebrities they can actually convince to come to the ceremony, especially when it comes to the international categories. They also make up categories each year, so they can squeeze in another celebrity (last year they gave the Bambi for "courage in film" to Tom Cruise *lol*)..

Lol, the Bambi always goes to some actor/actress who has a film out and just happens to be in Germany at that time to do promotion.

I rather enjoyed the "evil one' in Driving Miss Daisy.

I think it's one of the awards given to any big star who agrees to come and it is for kind of 'lifetime achievement'.
I still think there are people who should complain more about their Oscar snubs (MIA FARROW!) but I'm still a little surprised she haven't managed to get one.

I love her, I just think she was the product of a more innocent time. The 90's was such a great period for romantic comedies, and it had everything to do with actresses. And I don't think it's ageist to say that people like Julia Roberts and Meg Ryan have lost some of the luster they once had onscreen.

They probably just gave her the award because MEG RYAN spells GERMANY if you switch the letters around, haha!

Oh my, it does! Freaky...

I can never explain my intense dislike for Meg Ryan and her entire oeuvre post-When Harry Met Sally but it is an uncontrollable reaction. I think it has more to do with the endless amount of romcom dreck she starred in. And her turn in the unforgivable remake of The Women did nothing to endear her to me.

The only Hollywood figure who has managed to eclipse her on my Hate-O-Meter is Gwyneth "Goop" Paltrow.

Why on earth would Jessica Tandy be considered "the evil one?"

That's just misguided hate, that.
