Deep breath. Breath. Deep breath. Good. Okay…

1.) What are the pros? What are the cons?

2.) Is it a strong contender for a Best Picture/Director nom? win?

3.) How is Elfman’s score- kinda worried about that one.

4.) How are the performances by Brolin? Franco?

5.) I read on Towleroad that James Franco’s character comes off like a male “Suzie Diamond”????!!!!! Is this in anyway true?

I’m dying here Nathaniel…. ☺

I’ve officially worn out my MAC’s refresh button:

I need the 410 on MILK!!! where R U Nat??? What is keeping u????

Oh. That’s right. Your at REVOLUTIONARY ROAD.

Hmph. That’s fine; Fuck u Mendes. Fuck u and all your glossy, middle-brow suburban satires. Fuck em all to hell. Fuck u DiCaprio and your boyish-gone-manly looks. Oscar likes chicks not dicks… sorry, maybe when your old and ugly. Fuck u Bates and your I’m-playing-the-same-character-in-every-fucking-film/TV show. Fuck you Shannon and your skitzo breakthrough. Guess what: Ledger’s name is already carved on the Oscar. Fuck the pretentious book your film is based on. Fuck the Oscar-less Deakins and Newman. Fuck em, fuck em, fuck em!

…Kate, your still cool.

I recognize that Milk will probably be bound by the properties of the biopic genre.

It won't be revolutionary like last year's There Will Be Blood or transformative like 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.

Yet thus far I'm looking forward to it more than any other movie this year.

Unapologetically gay sounds great. As does good Sean Penn (which I feel has been lacking lately)

my alternative 7 word movie review is:

GAY KISSING. GAY SEX. GAY RIGHTS. HOORAY!

ryan definite best picture nom. I don't think there's a question.

elfman's score: more on that soon.

franco as susie diamond? SAY WHAT? i don't get it. But he was adorable.

Holy crap. Sean Penn's best in 13 years? A man of hyperbole Nathaniel is not. I'm so excited I might just have to go change my pants.

The one good thing about Prop 8 passing is it will undoubtedly bring more attention to this movie. Milk's battles still aren't over.

YAY for gay kissing, gay sex, and gay rights in a GOOD MOVIE!

In other news: Shame they gave Penn the oscar for Mystic River when they should've given it to Bill Murray or Johnny Depp. If they could've just waited a few years, he woulda been a shoe-in for this one.

I really think it shoulda gone to Murray, as that was clearly THE role of his career.

I saw Milk last week, and it is a winner. Penn was great -- except for the beginning when he seemed to struggle getting into character, sounding vaguely retarded with whiffs of 'I Am Sam' (swear to God). Franco was a warm, welcome presence, and Hirsch was a wonderful bundle of energy with comic timing par excellence. Luna for me was the only weak link, but that just could have been how he played his uber-annoying character.

Luna is to "Milk" what Thandie Newton was to "W."

Penn is great.

Brolin is great.

Franco was good, but the Oscar talk confuses me. He's just not in it very much, nor does he have much to do besides "be subtle."

it worked for catherine keener in capote.

Penn's best in 13 years? That doesn't include THE THIN RED LINE, now does it?

Yay "Milk"! Gus Van Sant finally has a ticket back to the Kodak.

rob i concur on Franco though I personally thought he was wonderful in it. But I don't see where the buzz is coming from given the nature of the role.

mikadzuki to clarify i meant Penn's best performance in 13 years. ;) I love The Thin Red Line

Saw it on Tuesday and absolutely loved it. Definitely shed tears at least twice. It's easily one of the best movies of the year.

Yippee! I've long awaited this (fave actors are Penn and Hirsch), but I have to see it Wednesday with the other mere mortals.

Catherine said...

Wednesday? Consider yourself lucky. I don't think I'll get to see it until January. :(

I saw Milk a week or so ago, and thought it magnificent. Detailed review on my blog for those who want to read more.

I kind of loved Diego Luna in it for some reason, perhaps because the left feild-y-ness made me feel more in the period of the movie, if that makes any sense.
