Coming Soon #5: "Dreamgirls"

Coming Soon But Not Soon Enough
#5 Dreamgirls (Dreamworks & Paramount. Arriving in December)

The official site for this big musical has been gleaming and generous for months now. It's got teaser trailers, production glimpses, and more. Imagine the publicity blitz when this Broadway behemoth's cast finally struts into movie theaters at Christmas.

Crazy in Love aside, I'm not much for Beyoncé (as previously noted), but I love the other two dreamgirls. Anika Noni Rose won the Tony for a recent favorite of mine on Broadway, Caroline or Change. And Jennifer Hudson, who has the daunting task of filling these legendary shoes [see video] to sing the show's showstopper, "And I Am Telling You (I'm Not Going)", is my favorite alumni of American Idol from any season --winner, loser, whatever. Truly the only AI contestant I've ever truly cared about. Plus it's Dreamgirls. And I love movie musicals, maybe you've heard?

Oscarwatchers, please note: The roles to be played by Beyoncé and Hudson were both nominated in the lead categories at the TONY Awards on Broadway (but they have stricter rules about who is lead and who is supporting than the Oscars do) and Hudson's was the winner. The role to be played by Jamie Foxx won the Best Actor Tony. The roles to be played by Eddie Murphy and Keith Robinson were both nominated in the supporting actor category. Murphy's role was the winner. The roles to be played by Anika and Danny Glover were not nominated in their Tony incarnations. This might not mean anything when it comes to the Oscars (which always have more competition and which love to play category fraud games) but it's just something to think about for awards obsessives like you (presumably) and I (definitely).

Hi Nathaniel, sorry if this is not the proper place for this comment:

I just saw VOLVER last night in Barcelona and...man...prepare yourself for a very nice, touching and unforgettable present from your beloved Pedro.

And I´m not a big fan of him.

But he´s getting to a point of maturity where he is able to mix masterfully drama+comedy+deep adult emotions+even a very funny thriller-mistery subplot.

An absolutely enjoyable movie and my first top five of 2006 (I don´t think it will drop from here at the end of the year).

Greetings from Catalonia!

I can't believe that a reality television alum could possibly be associated with Hollywood's Golden Night, but that number surely has the potential to be one of this year's best clips.

I think you can mark down Dreamgirls and Prarie Home Companion right now as two certain globe nominees for best comedy/musical... and possibly Four Your Consideration as well... looks to be a very strong year in that category.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm....I didn't have DREAMGIRLS in my annual report card.
I think this movie will be a hit or miss. Frankly, Chicago had its Oscar so I don't see this smaller story will be rewarded like the former.
Plus, this year HAS PLENTY of celebrated book's ADAPTATIONS with Oscar potential (GOOD GERMAN, BLACK DAHLIA, MARIE ANTOINETTE, LITTLE CHILDREN, RUNNING..., ETC)
Too many.
Added the STRONG LINEUP for either actresses and actors and the odds goes deeper.
I can't see clearly a room for this, unless it is in the technical aspects of it.
Wich would be ALSO difficult with the likes of BD, MA, THE FOUNTAIN and BLOCKBUSTERS SUPERMAN RETURNS, SPIDERMAN 3, et al.
Then again, maybe I'm wrong.

Ugh please no more Jamie Foxx nominations EVER!
And seriously if Beyoncé gets an Oscar nod for acting the universe will implode.
All that aside I´m thrilled about this film! I love me some big musicals yay!

I don't get the Beyonce hate. She's no Meryl Streep, but she's the perfect actress to play Deena Jones. They're like, the same person.

I predicted Dreamgirls to do miiiighty fine in the Oscars next year in my preview.

However, while I don't know the stage show, I'm sure Hudson will go supporting purely by virtue of her being. If Jamie Foxx can mysteriously be campaigned as supporting for Collateral then ANYTHING can.

And I second the Jamie Foxx hate. I wish he's just disappear FOREVER. I don't need people like that in my movies thank you very much.

And doesn't Beyonce remind you a little of Diana Ross. She was nominated for Lady Sings The Blues despite showing now acting talent whatsoever afterwards. She sings well in the movie, so she got nommed. Maybe Beyonce can follow suit.

That clip with ¨I'm telling you¨ got me the chills!!! Where is that woman nowadays?
Jennifer Hudson is absolutely THE perfect choice for the role.. not only she has the voice but in AI you could already see she had the personality..
